This is how they greet you here in Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel and Resort. You might smirk at first, but the truth is, it is kind of magical around here. All the little details inside and outside the hotel; the castle like building, the maze, hidden mickeys, will definitely draw smiles from the grumpiest person. As for myself, I was a kid inside Disneyland.

Hong Kong Disneyland is phenomenal because it made Disneyland accessible to Southeast Asians. For many years, children in the Philippines (and neighboring Southeast Asian countries) whose parents could not afford to bring them to the US or Japan, could only know Mickey Mouse and the Walt Disney prince and princesses through Disney channels and videos. With its opening in 2005, it made many childhood dreams come true.

Xiamen China is a major coastal city in Fujian Province. It’s also the ancestral home of many overseas Chinese scattered around Southeast Asia. If you haven’t already guessed where I’m going with this, my parents’ are from here (Fujian). My dad actually went to school in Xiamen City, so this is sort of a homecoming for him. He hasn’t been back there for over 30 years though, and with the mega urbanization that went on in mainland China in the recent years, he’s as much of a tourist as we are.
