Every information you need is now available on the new France-Visas website. After filling the visa application form, you will be redirected to the on-line appointment and tracking systems of VFS Global.

When to apply for Schengen Visa?
Applications can be made earliest three (3) months before the planned entry.
How much is Schengen Visa?Â
The visa-processing fee is EUR 60. The fee is non-refundable even if application is unsuccessful.
What are the requirements in applying Schengen Visas?
1. Signed and filled up Schengen Visa Application Form (click this) with photo attached, plus 1 additional photo.
Photo Specification
- Color photo taken against white background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering
- The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
2. Valid passport with 3 months validity from the end of visa duration. Photo copy of valid and former visas, if any.
3. Cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip and detailed itinerary. If you don’t have this, you have to write one on the spot before they will accept your requirements. Here is the cover letter addressed to the Honorable Consul I made in 2007.
4. Details of your trip
- Round trip ticket reservation. Reservations only.
- Itinerary of the whole duration including departure and arrival dates.
- Accommodations – hotel vouchers, seriously. If you’re staying with a good friend who is a French resident/national, then you need them to provide you with something called Attestation d’accueil (Certificate of Board and Lodging) and your host’s national identity card or residence permit.
Why I said good friend?  Because it’s a lot of trouble for them to get this. If you have a French national host, just cut and paste below list for the document you needed from them.  These are basically records of their existence in France such as title of property or contract of lease, utility billing statement as address proof, bank statements, medical records, pay slip, and finally they have to go to the city hall to have all these certified. Like I said, lots of trouble. :)
The attestation d’accueil is a form needed to be presented to the City Hall with the following documents:
5. Proof of employment
- Certificate of employment stating monthly salary and approved leave of absence.
- If self employed, official business registration for current and previous year.
6. Proof of Income
- Income Tax Return
- Recent Bank Certification
- Photocopy of the last 3 months statement of Account of the same bank account.
- If someone other than yourself is paying for the the trip, then submit financial document of the sponsor instead.
7. Identity / Marital Status:
- Photocopy of First page of Passport and all relevant obtained visas
- Authenticated birth certificate from NSO. If married, bring photocopy of your marriage contract.
8. Travel insurance that covers the entire duration of your intended stay with minimun coverage EUR 30,000. The medical policies must state the following points :
- Medical attention and treatment will be given in case of illness or accident
- The injured or ill traveller can be transported home for treatment + body repatriation in case of death
- The insurance coverage is a least 30 000 euros (50 000 US dollars)
- The insurance must be valid for all 25 Schengen member states which should be listed on the policy
- The insurance company must be re-insured, the name of the re-insurer and his TOLL FREE phone number must be listed on the policy
- The policy must allow CASHLESS SETTLEMENTS of claims. The name of the company in charge of such settlements and their toll free number must be clearly stated on the policy.

hello wanderlass!
i was invited by my german bf to visit germany in april to june next year but its my first time to apply for a schengen visa.i am afraid for this because it was states here in the applications that i have to fill out my ex husbands name and address.but my passport i have was single not married because of some discrepancies of some documents..if i have to put this NA do they ask me some supporting documents for this if i would say single? would they believe me or it will affect my interview?all my expenses for the journey are all shouldered by my bf and also he will send me the invitation upon applying for the visa..please gave me some advise for this..its my first time and also my bf told me to be to submit my application this december..please do help me with this and looking forward to hear replies…God Bless
Do you mean that you use your maiden name in your passport? My mother kept her maiden name and never had problem even if her status is married and has different surname from husband and children.
I’m not a professional. Take my advice at your own risk.
My advice would be to apply as married if you are still legally married. This could actually be beneficial for embassy to think that you have a family/husband to come back to. The reason why we aren’t being given visa is because they always think we won’t come back. Which is a good assumption actually. You don’t need to disclose that inviting party is a boyfriend. A friend can be sponsor and shoulder expense too.
thank you very much wanderlass for the very nice advise for this..i will keep in touch soon before my application to the german embassy..
Just curious. Since this is probably the first source with helpful information I’ve found regarding the process for a Schengen Visa in the Philippines. Next year I have an exchange program (“internship”) in Hungary good for 1 1/2 months, and after the program ends I’m planning to do some Euro-tripping for the remaining months of the 3 months of the visa’s validity. I’ve recently graduated college and I don’t have a job and don’t really plan to have one so soon, would this pose any kind of problem? My unemployment, I mean? :/ My mom is going to finance everything during my internship and hopefully, euro-trip. I’m planning to ask the Honorary Consulate of Hungary in Makati for more info but I’d like to at least get some thoughts of those who’ve applied for this visa. :/ Thanks!
you present your mother’s financial document with the application.
Hi, Wanderlass! Just like everyone else, I would like to thank you for your post. It’s been very helpful in my preparation for my Schengen visa application. Will you kindly help me with a few more things? :)
I have been learning German for almost a year now. I’m going to Austria mainly due to the encouragement of my German professor to continue studying the language in a native German country. Just like The Shiny Dot, my parents are financing everything for me. My trip is from Mar 23 to May 30.
For the first week, I’ll be staying with an Austrian friend of mine. While from April 1 to May 30, I have booked my own room in a shared apartment in Vienna for my language course.
My concerns rest mainly on the requirements that I need to get from my Austrian friend. My friend already sent me a signed letter of invitation stating that he will accommodate me during my first week, and that he will also be an additional support throughout my stay for my German course.
1. Would you know if I still need to ask from my friend an “extract of land register of host” for proof of accommodation, since he’ll be accommodating me for the first week of my stay?
2. The Austrian Embassy’s list of requirements states that proof of sufficient financial means may be substituted with an “electronic affidavit of liability,” much like the attestation d’ accueil asked by the French Embassy.
I already have enough proof of sufficient financial means (from my mom’s financial accounts and mine as well), which I can assert as the reason for not processing an affidavit of liability from my friend. Would you agree with me that I don’t have to ask my friend to process an affidavit of liability?
3. Will the signed letter of invitation be enough as “proof of relationship” with my friend? Do I have to print emails or pictures?
Will really appreciate your help! Thank you!
i also think you don’t need your friend’s “attestation” esp that you’ve already registered for the course and have book accommodation.
Okay! Many thanks! Will share here the result of my visa application soon. Happy holidays! :)
Hi everyone,
Can somebody advise me about the bank requirements. Does it really have to have a 200k on your account, as i only have minimal amount in my account. My french friend will shoulder all expenses going to france and going back to manila.

So I had my interview yesterday at the French Embassy and it actually only took me 10 minutes. The officer didn’t ask belabored me with difficult questions (and difficult attitude…just a tiny bit though!). I guess there’s something to be said about having complete requirements that are in order.
Wish me luck, guys. I’ll be back in the Embassy on November 7 to get my passport. That’s 5 days as they said in their website. Thanks for your help, Wanderlass!
Hello, i’m not sure if this is visa-related, but how did you manage to fit all the stamps on your passport? I am also planning to tour europe by summer next year, and my passport is already almost full, i think there’s still about 4 pages left, since I travel Asia a lot. What do you suggest I do before I apply for schengen visa? renew it? Appreciate your reply. :)
u only get 1 stamp in and 1 stamp out as there are no borders among schengen member states.
Hi! I was wondering, if you will be coming from UK to france, youll get 1 stamp in and 1 stamp out right? If I go back to London from France, will I be able to get another 180 days if I have been issued a 2 years UK visa?
Hi wanderlass. Nice write-up from you I must say. I was just wondering regarding our trip that consists of our whole family. We have members that are apparently not minors already but still studying and therefore do not have any employment certificate, source of income and etc. regarding those matters. Would it be a given fact to the embassy that their parents would be supporting their trip in that case? Would the embassy approve those matters?
hi wanderlass, thanks for this site, its a big help for a first timer.. I have an expat friend who just finish contract here in the philippines, Their Family wants me to visit in their place in Brittany France for one week, as they will shoulder all expenses together with my plane ticket back and fort, the invitation and all the requirement they will submit here..
I Just want to know the minimum amount required in Bank Account.
Thanks for your warm and kind response.
Hello Roma,If I were you, you must bring more documents and much better if u put 200k on ur account, make sure on your interview , stay calm, me, I look so nervous co’z it’s my first time, but I got the lesson, next time I know what to do na.. My schengen visa has been refused, They said I can appeal, but I don’t how exactly to send an appeal letter,, and what document should i attached there… Is there anybody can give me idea? I have no Idea…
hi!!!your blog is very informative…do u happen to know if it matters if i change my itinerary from the one i submitted during interview after the visa has been granted…same dates though but just different place and flight details and hotels…pls help
after getting your visa, you can change everything about your travel plan, as long as you enter schengen within the validity date and stay only up to the number of days granted.
hi wanderlass,
is your following statement still applies today?
“after getting your visa, you can change everything about your travel plan, as long as you enter schengen within the validity date and stay only up to the number of days granted.”
i’m planning to apply a schengen visa for a 5 days tour only via Sweden embassy but my plan is to not go there (Sweden) when I get my visa but somewhere else (e.g. Paris and Amsterdam). will i be questioned when i enter let say Paris, that I told during my visa application that I will first enter Sweden?
thanks in advance
j e
You have the obligation of being truthful with your application and you have to apply at the country that is your intended main destination, or if there is no clear main destination (country where you will spent the most time), at the country of first entry, after which you can tour around. Ofcourse travel plans could still chance after the visa has been issued, or after you arrive, but don’t seek trouble by lying! Mind you that you can enter, travel and exit via all Schengen countries. However at the border they may ask you to show you still meet all criteria, including that you are still heading to your main destination. So you could enter via the Netherlands on a Danish Schengen visa, unless the border guards believe you lied and never had any intention to head to Denmark, then they will deny entry.
