Applying Schengen Visa from French Embassy Online
The process in applying for Schengen Visa through the French Embassy has changed since I applied in 2007 and 2011. It is now more efficient with the submission of documents done online.
Every information you need is now available on the new France-Visas website. After filling the visa application form, you will be redirected to the on-line appointment and tracking systems of VFS Global.

When to apply for Schengen Visa?
Applications can be made earliest three (3) months before the planned entry.
How much is Schengen Visa?Â
The visa-processing fee is EUR 60. The fee is non-refundable even if application is unsuccessful.
What are the requirements in applying Schengen Visas?
1. Signed and filled up Schengen Visa Application Form (click this) with photo attached, plus 1 additional photo.
Photo Specification
- Color photo taken against white background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering
- The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
2. Valid passport with 3 months validity from the end of visa duration. Photo copy of valid and former visas, if any.
3. Cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip and detailed itinerary. If you don’t have this, you have to write one on the spot before they will accept your requirements. Here is the cover letter addressed to the Honorable Consul I made in 2007.
4. Details of your trip
- Round trip ticket reservation. Reservations only.
- Itinerary of the whole duration including departure and arrival dates.
- Accommodations – hotel vouchers, seriously. If you’re staying with a good friend who is a French resident/national, then you need them to provide you with something called Attestation d’accueil (Certificate of Board and Lodging) and your host’s national identity card or residence permit.
Why I said good friend?  Because it’s a lot of trouble for them to get this. If you have a French national host, just cut and paste below list for the document you needed from them.  These are basically records of their existence in France such as title of property or contract of lease, utility billing statement as address proof, bank statements, medical records, pay slip, and finally they have to go to the city hall to have all these certified. Like I said, lots of trouble. :)
The attestation d’accueil is a form needed to be presented to the City Hall with the following documents:
5. Proof of employment
- Certificate of employment stating monthly salary and approved leave of absence.
- If self employed, official business registration for current and previous year.
6. Proof of Income
- Income Tax Return
- Recent Bank Certification
- Photocopy of the last 3 months statement of Account of the same bank account.
- If someone other than yourself is paying for the the trip, then submit financial document of the sponsor instead.
7. Identity / Marital Status:
- Photocopy of First page of Passport and all relevant obtained visas
- Authenticated birth certificate from NSO. If married, bring photocopy of your marriage contract.
8. Travel insurance that covers the entire duration of your intended stay with minimun coverage EUR 30,000. The medical policies must state the following points :
- Medical attention and treatment will be given in case of illness or accident
- The injured or ill traveller can be transported home for treatment + body repatriation in case of death
- The insurance coverage is a least 30 000 euros (50 000 US dollars)
- The insurance must be valid for all 25 Schengen member states which should be listed on the policy
- The insurance company must be re-insured, the name of the re-insurer and his TOLL FREE phone number must be listed on the policy
- The policy must allow CASHLESS SETTLEMENTS of claims. The name of the company in charge of such settlements and their toll free number must be clearly stated on the policy.

Are you both Filipino passport holder? If same then family trip I guess, but where in the application form is that? If you are Belgian passport holder, then for your mother it should be visiting relatives-has different requirements that are not found in this blog post.
Hi wanderlass!
Your blog helps a lot when I applied my first out of the country trip and thats to sweden. I followed your blogs and read it almost everyday before I brought my application at swiss embassy. After 5 days it was approved and now ill start my 2nd visit to sweden and hoping they will grant my 3 months visit this summer.
Having a complete requirements and honest answers is the key to have an approval…in my case yes, because my marital status is so complicated.
Good luck to all of us who wishes to have an approved schengen visa and thank you for this very helpfull blog.
More power Wanderlass!
Happy to know. Cheers!
I want to ask some advice because I’m planning to get schengen visa to visit my boyfriend in Sweden. I don’t have any bank accounts and job yet. We tackled and agreed about these things and that he will cover all of my expenses during my stay there. He’s been here in Philippines last month to visit and see me and my family for a couple of weeks. And so we planned to get a visa for me so I could visit his place also and Im going to stay with him in his house in sweden when I get there.Do I have any other option to have Fiance visa. Cause we’re planning to get a fiance visa if possible. Isn’t it? I hope so. I was wondering If there are any rules getting fiance visa or any changes of the requirements to get schengen (fiance) visa? I only have my Passport and Authenticated Birth Certificate from NSO and he (my boyfriend) will just send his statement of bank account and the Invitation letter from sweden. What else should I prepare? Is it only me should make the cover letter for the purpose of my trip? and Is it possible to get a visa first before booking the trip? I am so confused coz it s gonna be my first time applying a visa..
thank you and i am hoping that you can answer all of my question; I am in badly in need of your help with my situation.
By the way, I ended up applying for a Schengen at the French Consulate in Frankfurt. It was so easy. Basically, the same requirements, but all I did was show up and they asked me how long I wanted the Schengen to be valid.
They released the visa in 20 minutes.
So, I’m glad I didn’t travel illegally if it’s this easy to get a Schengen visa here.
I hope that information helps your readers!
Nice. So what is the length of your visa validity? I bet nobody even checked your visa while you’re in France ya? :)
I was allowed up to a five-year validity. But since I’ll be getting my US citizenship next year, it wouldn’t be necessary. I meekly asked for a one year visa. And even if immigration will take longer to process my citizenship, it’s really not that hard to get another Schengen anyway.
My trip to France wouldn’t be until June, when it’s warmer. It would be no use travelling when it’s too cold, ja?
Thanks for your advise! I have referred your blog to my family who wish to travel here to visit. It’s very informational. Thanks alot.
Hello wanderlass, its a very helpful info, please help me,i want to know how much is the required money in the bank account?i want to make sure that its enough and i will not be denied for my tourist application, please help me thank you
I don’t know for sure, but if I am to make a guess, I’d say about 100euro (Php5,000) per day of stay applying for. Again, this is just a guess. I DO NOT KNOW FOR SURE. Take advice at your own risk. Thanks.
Hi! Thanks for a very informative post. May I ask a question? Before we head on to a Schengen state, we’ll be touring Dubai for 3 days. Do I need to present my visa for UAE during my Schengen visa application? I already have the appointment next week and I’m afraid my UAE visa won’t be ready yet before that date. Do you know if it is required, or is it okay to have it still in process when I apply? Thanks!

Hello good citizens. first off, thanks for sharing your knowledge. such unconditional generosity is rare nowadays, kudos. :) i am dying to see Europe as everybody is. it will be my first time, and i will be alone. im thinking of netherlands as port of entry. my only problem is that i am a graduating law student, and i might consider going there after taking the Bar Exams. i do not know what to do with the income and employment requirements, etc. but i have money at the bank. and then, will it be helpful that i have a 10-year multiple entry US visa? i have actually been there last Halloween. and also some Asian travel destinations stamped on my passport to expirse 2015. Thank you so much for taking time reading this. :)
hi!hope all is well.i think it’ll be easy for you to get a schengen visa since you have an existing US visa.happy travel!
Hello Ms. Wanderlass!
I don’t know if this has been asked already but i just have this situation and i’m really at loss. The date stated in the guaranty is from April 1-21. However, when i tried to book for an appointment at the embassy’s website, the only available date is from march 19 onwards. If i’ll be submitting my docs on that date, then maybe i’ll be running out of time since it takes atleast 7 to 10 days to process visa and considering the upcoming holidays (holyweek). My question is that, can i apply for a different period (ex. April 20-may 11) the dates of which are beyond the dates as provided in the guaranty?
I hope you can share with me ur ideas on this. Thanks in advance.
my date of my guarantee and application didnt match either. The consul actually asked me when I want my visa’s beginning date be, as he knew I will be going in from UK.
To be safe, create an email conversation with your guarantor about the situation and have him/her say that it is fine to arrive anytime later than the invite. And then print this letter for just in case; She/he doesnt need to reapply the guarantee papers naturally. G’luck
