Applying Schengen Visa from French Embassy Online
The process in applying for Schengen Visa through the French Embassy has changed since I applied in 2007 and 2011. It is now more efficient with the submission of documents done online.
Every information you need is now available on the new France-Visas website. After filling the visa application form, you will be redirected to the on-line appointment and tracking systems of VFS Global.

When to apply for Schengen Visa?
Applications can be made earliest three (3) months before the planned entry.
How much is Schengen Visa?Â
The visa-processing fee is EUR 60. The fee is non-refundable even if application is unsuccessful.
What are the requirements in applying Schengen Visas?
1. Signed and filled up Schengen Visa Application Form (click this) with photo attached, plus 1 additional photo.
Photo Specification
- Color photo taken against white background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering
- The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
2. Valid passport with 3 months validity from the end of visa duration. Photo copy of valid and former visas, if any.
3. Cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip and detailed itinerary. If you don’t have this, you have to write one on the spot before they will accept your requirements. Here is the cover letter addressed to the Honorable Consul I made in 2007.
4. Details of your trip
- Round trip ticket reservation. Reservations only.
- Itinerary of the whole duration including departure and arrival dates.
- Accommodations – hotel vouchers, seriously. If you’re staying with a good friend who is a French resident/national, then you need them to provide you with something called Attestation d’accueil (Certificate of Board and Lodging) and your host’s national identity card or residence permit.
Why I said good friend?  Because it’s a lot of trouble for them to get this. If you have a French national host, just cut and paste below list for the document you needed from them.  These are basically records of their existence in France such as title of property or contract of lease, utility billing statement as address proof, bank statements, medical records, pay slip, and finally they have to go to the city hall to have all these certified. Like I said, lots of trouble. :)
The attestation d’accueil is a form needed to be presented to the City Hall with the following documents:
5. Proof of employment
- Certificate of employment stating monthly salary and approved leave of absence.
- If self employed, official business registration for current and previous year.
6. Proof of Income
- Income Tax Return
- Recent Bank Certification
- Photocopy of the last 3 months statement of Account of the same bank account.
- If someone other than yourself is paying for the the trip, then submit financial document of the sponsor instead.
7. Identity / Marital Status:
- Photocopy of First page of Passport and all relevant obtained visas
- Authenticated birth certificate from NSO. If married, bring photocopy of your marriage contract.
8. Travel insurance that covers the entire duration of your intended stay with minimun coverage EUR 30,000. The medical policies must state the following points :
- Medical attention and treatment will be given in case of illness or accident
- The injured or ill traveller can be transported home for treatment + body repatriation in case of death
- The insurance coverage is a least 30 000 euros (50 000 US dollars)
- The insurance must be valid for all 25 Schengen member states which should be listed on the policy
- The insurance company must be re-insured, the name of the re-insurer and his TOLL FREE phone number must be listed on the policy
- The policy must allow CASHLESS SETTLEMENTS of claims. The name of the company in charge of such settlements and their toll free number must be clearly stated on the policy.

Hi Wanderlass,
Much thanks that i saw your blog, very informative and you patiently reply to the comments :D I want to travel to Italy this coming August (medyo matagal pa) but i want to be prepared since its my first time applying for a tourist visa (ive travelled to other countries which didnt require any visas) i hope that it wont be a big factor to them. Italian visa doesn’t allow bookings from travel agencies so i really have to do things on my own. Wish me luck :)
My bf is italian but ill be the one paying for my trip and we will travel to some parts of italy so i dont need sponsorship documents/proof of residency. But do you think i still need to mention anything about him? since we will be together and the hotel reservations will show that its for two persons? Also do you think 65-100 euros per day is also applicable to italy?
Thanks again and looking forward to your response :)
I think it is no problem if you have proof of financial capability.
Hi everyone, I want to ask advice because I’m planning to get schengen visa to visit my boyfriend in Lithuania. I’m only graduating on march and I don’t have any bank accounts and job yet. I will go there on May to July. What can I bring as a proof that I am going back here in Philippines? He will shoulder all expenses during my stay. And where can I find reservation for tickets? :)
I’m thanking you guys in advance for the help! God Bless! :)
I work from home, meaning, my client is based in the US. since I don’t have an ITR, will this affect my application? a cert of employment “maybe” requested, but the thing is, since I work from home & I can literally work anywhere, I’m worried that this might hinder me from acquiring one. although back then, I was granted with a Schengen visa but I was still office-based.
your thoughts on this matter is highly appreciated!
hi cza.. how did your application go? Kasi may freelance jobs din ako eh and I dont have ITR.
I’m going to apply for visa through the Italian Embassy and what if I get denied is it possible to apply to another embassy nalang like french embassy rather than to appeal sa Italian embassy? :) Thank you. And Hm, what embassy kaya mas nag aapprove? hehe thank you :)
Hello wanderlass and to all followers
I had my schengen visa before but with the help of my french boss, now I want to apply by myself though I would want to try going to Barcelona this time, but I don’t have any idea how is it applying the Spanish embassy.
Does anyone here has experience applying at Spanish embassy?
If I won’t be able to get any info from filipinos about the embassy then I think I will just end up planning to go back to France and apply at the French embassy.
WANDERLASS, you think my previous schengen visa will help me being approved?
What I’ve learned from previous experience, it’s 50-50.. 50% completeness of papers, 50% convincing the visa officer that you have a strong reason coming back to Philippines and without any intention to illegally overstay.
Though I already had my visa, I am still very hesitant, my last interview was like life & death questions.. and before I just had to refer everything to my french boss, but now I will be applying by myself.
Any advice?
I have a very good job (not boost but to give info) You think that would be enough proof for them that I intend to come back to Philippines no matter what?
Thanks. This blog is a big help.
Hopefully, I’ll get some responses.
if u have complete document, there’s no reason you will not be given visa. check the spanish embassy visa for the exact procedure. good luck
Hi Wanderlass,
Thank you very much for your informative blog! I am also apply for Schengen Visa to visit my cousin who will shoulder all of my expenses, my main problem is that, It’s impossible for me to get a 90-day leave from my current employer. Thus, is it okay if I just submit, lets say, 30-day approved leave but my itinerary and schengen visa is for 90-day? Does the Consul really strict about the approved leave thing?

hi po. ask ko lang, will people from the airport/ anyone from France will ask my proof of accomodation ? or a proof of financial means ?
Hi! I got a question. I’ve never travel outside the country before but I’m planning to apply a Schengen Visa. I am employed and got enough money on my bank. I want a Schengen Visa as tourist …is there a requirements that I need to travel to other country (such as Thailand, Singapore, Hongkong…)before applying a Schengen Visa? I really need your opinion. :)
no such requirement. if u have complete document that supports your travel and reason for coming back, u should be fine.
Hi Wanderlass,
Do you know if I’ll get a Schengen visa if I can’t show proof of employment and leave of absence? I’m a freelance writer and this has been a perennial problem for me. I’m hoping France will be easy on that.
Thanks!
You can try, but I don’t think the French embassy is lenient. I heard Greece is pretty easy.
Hi, I am applying for both UK and Schengen visa. If I am not sure when my Schengen visa will be released, can I already set a schedule for my UK visa? I believe they will get my passport or can I tell them I am applying for UK visa as well and need my passport to bring to the embassy? Please enlighten. Thanks so much for all your valuable help!
you will need to show your passport on both application. so you have to make estimate or wait.
Hi! I would just like to ask about the UK visa application, because I’m planning to visit my sister who is studying in England and then I’m planning to go to Italy from there, what kind of UK visa should I get? And would they honor my Shenzhen visa if I was to depart from UK? Thank u!
