Applying Schengen Visa from French Embassy Online
The process in applying for Schengen Visa through the French Embassy has changed since I applied in 2007 and 2011. It is now more efficient with the submission of documents done online.
Every information you need is now available on the new France-Visas website. After filling the visa application form, you will be redirected to the on-line appointment and tracking systems of VFS Global.
Philippine passport holders are required Schengen visa to visit one or more of the states in the Schengen Region in Europe. This visa is valid in all Schengen states for a stay of up to 90 days within a six-month period for a visit, tourism or business. It is not valid for employment.

When to apply for Schengen Visa?
Applications can be made earliest three (3) months before the planned entry.
How much is Schengen Visa?Â
The visa-processing fee is EUR 60. The fee is non-refundable even if application is unsuccessful.
What are the requirements in applying Schengen Visas?
1. Signed and filled up Schengen Visa Application Form (click this) with photo attached, plus 1 additional photo.
Photo Specification
- Color photo taken against white background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering
- The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
2. Valid passport with 3 months validity from the end of visa duration. Photo copy of valid and former visas, if any.
3. Cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip and detailed itinerary. If you don’t have this, you have to write one on the spot before they will accept your requirements. Here is the cover letter addressed to the Honorable Consul I made in 2007.
4. Details of your trip
- Round trip ticket reservation. Reservations only.
- Itinerary of the whole duration including departure and arrival dates.
- Accommodations – hotel vouchers, seriously. If you’re staying with a good friend who is a French resident/national, then you need them to provide you with something called Attestation d’accueil (Certificate of Board and Lodging) and your host’s national identity card or residence permit.
Why I said good friend?  Because it’s a lot of trouble for them to get this. If you have a French national host, just cut and paste below list for the document you needed from them.  These are basically records of their existence in France such as title of property or contract of lease, utility billing statement as address proof, bank statements, medical records, pay slip, and finally they have to go to the city hall to have all these certified. Like I said, lots of trouble. :)
The attestation d’accueil is a form needed to be presented to the City Hall with the following documents:
5. Proof of employment
- Certificate of employment stating monthly salary and approved leave of absence.
- If self employed, official business registration for current and previous year.
6. Proof of Income
- Income Tax Return
- Recent Bank Certification
- Photocopy of the last 3 months statement of Account of the same bank account.
- If someone other than yourself is paying for the the trip, then submit financial document of the sponsor instead.
7. Identity / Marital Status:
- Photocopy of First page of Passport and all relevant obtained visas
- Authenticated birth certificate from NSO. If married, bring photocopy of your marriage contract.
8. Travel insurance that covers the entire duration of your intended stay with minimun coverage EUR 30,000. The medical policies must state the following points :
- Medical attention and treatment will be given in case of illness or accident
- The injured or ill traveller can be transported home for treatment + body repatriation in case of death
- The insurance coverage is a least 30 000 euros (50 000 US dollars)
- The insurance must be valid for all 25 Schengen member states which should be listed on the policy
- The insurance company must be re-insured, the name of the re-insurer and his TOLL FREE phone number must be listed on the policy
- The policy must allow CASHLESS SETTLEMENTS of claims. The name of the company in charge of such settlements and their toll free number must be clearly stated on the policy.

Good morning,
I need some advise regarding my situation..I am working as a nurse and I have a German boyfriend for almost 9 years. He wants me to apply for schenegen visa but I’m confused which visa should I apply for? I mean which better? A tourist visa or visiting a friend? (He’s going to shoulder all my expenses). I once applied for schenegen visa when I was in college but I was denied. I will try again this time and hopefully, it will be successful. I traveled to Japan last year.
Thank you for reading and I hope to hear your advises..God Bless!
if someone will pay ur travel and other expenses… submit the financial statements of the person or the sponsor .. instead
Hello Jhie, Thank you for the reply..and thank you for sharing information. Appreciated it a lot..;)
You will be staying with him no?In that case you apply for meeting friends visa. Tourist categeory is meant for people who arrange their own accomodation (hotel) etc.
Hi rob. Hi. Me and my mom just applied last friday (july 24,2015)for 61 days of visa. Her long time friend for 35 years invited us for her and her partner 50th birthday. I am just worried because they might rufuse to give us visa because the processing time would be not enough. Our departure date would be on august 6, 2015. Possible pa kaya na mabigyan kami ng visa?
Hi Rob, Thank you for the reply..
I will be staying with him. Thank you for giving me idea. Appreciated it a lot.
Hi Rob, I got visa last April from Netherlands Embassy, I was given for 30 days but stayed for 25 days. My fiancee wants me to spend christmas and new year vacation there again but since next month we will apply and doesnt have the documents from him like invitation and bank slip etc what if I submit a scanned documents from him. hi Rob,
Im Helene, been backpacking around Asia for year and blogger. Unemployed. Got denied with Aus visa recently. Reason: visit to australia is not genuine. Now, me and my backpacker boyfriend who will be finishing his work holiday visa in Aus decided to try traveling in EU together. We’re both doing Couchsurfing, volunteer stuff and other cheap means to travel. Is there any chance I could get one? Bank certs, no problem. Properties–none at all. Business permits-zero. Is it easier to get it in Norway embassy since he’s Finnish. Or would you recommend Netherlands. Or totally skip EU hahahaha! Although I can use my dad’s business papers.
Thanks for taking time reading my post!
Best regards and good luck to everyone!
ps. sorry about my english on my post comment before .. :) godbless ..
hi, i just apply for schengen visa in france embassy last june 11 and i was refuse to get a visa coz the reason is about that my intention to leave the member state before my visa expire is not ascertained.. my husband was australian .. our plan was to meet in france coz he have a business trip in france but he doesnt hold a business visa just tourist entry .. i was thinking of to make a complain or appeal .. but it will take two months .. is it possible for me to reapply again without making any appeal .. my husband next trip to france he will be working in france we will fly this end of the month of july in australia for him to get a visa .. what else documents do you think i can use to make sure to them that i will be back here in phil. i have three kids and which is still small i wont be able to bring if i travel ..
You can re-apply, appeal or do both. If you re-apply be sure to show good reasons to return (job, family ,property you own ,positive travel history to other countries, letter and passport copy of your partner expaining your plans etc. etc.).
hi, i was denied for the same reason.. though i have job here in the phil, i do not have property under my name.. the land property that belong to my familty is still under the name of my great grand father.. i wonder if this said land title will do to present to the embassy for my reapplication? is my status as single and working as a nurse affected my previous application? thank you :)
Hi, Rob! I am about to apply for my tourist visa on September at the French embassy and I have some questions to ask. The purpose of my trip is to visit my family and spend Xmas with them. My mother is married to a French national and they got married and lived here with us for almost a year. They recently left the Philippines to reside in Bretagne. Her husband will be the one sponsoring for my whole trip, he will be sending me the invitation letter/attestation as well as his bank statements and ITR. With these documents, do I still need to provide my own bank statements? I have a savings account but it does not contain a very large amount. How about the certificate of employment? Because I work online from home thus a COE would be unavailable. Also, I have copies of their family book and marriage certificates as proof of relationship with the host. I am a little stressed about these because they might cause a visa denial.
Hi. I’m going to Czech Republic in October for a conference. My questions are
1.) do i need to do “show money” even if the chairman of our department who will go with me will give a letter indicating that she will shoulder my expenses?
2.) do i need to show a birth certificate of my son?
Thanks and more power
If your host shows that they pay all expenses (usually the host needs to supply some sort of form confirming this), then technically you should not need to show any proof of financial solvability but it does not hurt if you can show some cash (in the bank, credit or debet card) and travel with some cash in your wallet for unforseen costs etc. You can indicated that you host will take care of the expenses but that you have some cash yourself aswell. Just tick the box on the left (you) and right (sponsor) side where the form asks about who takes care of travelcosts , accomodation etc.
Hi Rob.I do all the papers I need now for the visa in France..but my problem is.. I am not sure if my boss will allow me to have a 90 days leave in my work..is the copy of leave of absence in my work is really need for this visa?I have ITR and COE..thank you very much..
Hi! I have a visa appointment this coming week. This will be first out of the country trip. Will this be unfavorable to me? I mean, will this affect my application (i.e. not being granted visa)? Thanks!
Hi! Im a Filipina, who’s planning to visit a friend in Norway. Is there anyone here who’s been in Norway already and have Schengen Visa. What are the requirements in applying? Thank you
Hi Rob!
I have a girlfriend (filipino, we’ve been together for 7 yrs) who is currently taking her MBA program and will be graduating in Switzerland in August. I am planning to attend her graduation together with her parents. I can provide all the requirements. Our roundtrip tickets are already paid, we already have an itinerary, hotel bookings, eurail pass, even a letter from the school certifying that she is enrolled there and inviting us to attend her graduation. My only problem is that i dont have an ITR since i am working in my father’s company (single prop.) for almost two years. Her parents dont have a problem since they are frequent travelers. They have visas from the US, Japan, Korea. Her mom has been to Europe twice or thrice already. Most likely they will be issued one. How about me, what are the chances of me getting a visa? Do i still need to file for an ITR? Hoping for your response. Thanks a lot.

Hi everyone.. just want to share one thing that I think will help a lot in having a schengen visa approved. I have been denied once and this is the paper that i missed, I re-applied with this paper included in my documents and I got approved. I just got back last January from France and wll be travelling back this ciming July 8. What paper am I talking about? It is a letter of invitation from your sponsor and not just a letter, it must be notarized by a solicitor/lawyer.. I also had my on cover letter notarized. And I am confident that this really was a great help… Invitation and cover letters are listed in the requirements though it didn’t indicate there that you can have it notarized. I applied once with the letters un-notarized and got denied, I re’applied same set of documents, only difference is that letters were notarized and i got approved. Hope that helps… Good luck everyone!
hi mitch i would like to ask. you notarized them (letter of invitiation and cover letter ) here in ph right? or letter of invitation needs to be notarized from the sponsor’s place?
It’s both.. I got my cover letter notarized here in the Philippines and he got the invitation letter notarized from a solicitor/lawyer in France
hi mitch,
i would just like to ask what kind of cover letter you did? and how can i have that?
hello Mitch…i would like to ask, the invitation letter u have is an original copy or just scanned ? if he send it to u the original copy by how? and how many days u received it ? u apply it by urself or u used a travel agency to help u process ur papers ?

Hello Mitch..schengen visa is your first visa application or not?
Because at the moment I am preparing all my documents for schengen visa(Greece)..But we travelled together for the couple months ..I have UK visa and turkey e visa’s(2)..Do you think they gonna give me a hard time for this?
Thanks and hope to hear soon ..
Cheers!
A positive travel history to other countries, especialy western countries, is big bonus to indicate that you are a reliable person/traveller with no intentions to settle illegally. Be sure to point those foreign visas out to the embassy.
Hi mitch
I have a good friend in prague, czech republic shes a doktor and shes inviting me to come to her place maybe next month and she will support me everything what else i need to prepare for the requirment (i only have a passport i dont have money in my bank can u give me a help how could i get a visa to visit her….
Thanks ahead
Sharina:)
Most important would be showing reasons to return:a job, study, taking care of family, property that you own etc.toshow that you have too much in PH to leave behind and won’t become an illegal immigrant. For the rest, check the website of the embassy carefully and the general info given here on this page.
hi mitch Im just new here. Can I ask ?? What is the cover letter???
HI guys.. I’m planning to visit Belgium on Dec. It’s my first time to travel I dunno what’s the first step I have to do.. Any suggestions please.. Thanks..
Hi I had interview June 29 at austrian embassy I think the most important factor is your strong ties in Philippines. I am waiting for my visa and I hope it will be approved.
Hey, did they contact you for pick up? How long did it take?
Can you help me about the requirements needed for spouse visa in france. My husband is working in france now as military but he is a british national he wants me to join him in france. We are just newly wed. Hope u can help me. Thnx
If your husband is from the UK (or other EU/EEA country) and you are going to join him to any other EU/EEA country except the country that he is a citizen of, the application for a visa will be FREE of any costs, handled ASAP and with minimum hassle and paperwork.More info should be on the embassy website “visiting/joining EU spouse/family member” or check hte website of the European Union “Travel documents for non-EU family members” : europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/travel/entry-exit/non-eu-family/index_en.htm
hi this sounds interesting, … im a brit/uk passport holder.. but live work in sweden..have done for many years but Always kept my British Passport.
Im my case just to confirm.. would the g/f apply at the Swedish ( norway as sweden dont have an embassy in phils) and its free of charge ?
Sounds strange..that no Money will be paid to any embassy .
Have friends here who have thai g/f .. and they all came on Tourist visa and married had kids here..seems its easier this way than apply for permenant visas in phils—
Hello mitch,
My friend is inviting me to go to visit denmark,he will send me an invitation letter and i am applying next week,he did the invitation letter ONLINE,he fill out something. Do i still need to have a notarized personalized invitation letter coming from him? Is it better than the online invitation letter? THANK YOU
Hey Rob :)
I read most of your visa application advice on your Web. But case is a bit complicated, I have been dating a guy from Hungary for a year and some months now but we have never met in person. So we planing to meet this coming August , he has a very good job and I too have a good job.but my biggest worry is will I be granted visa if I say we have never met? How do we go about this? Help…
Hello Mitch..good day..I am starting to collect all the documents I need for applying tourist visa in France.I have my 11 years working here in Phillipines and it’s easy for me to have the COE and ITR.but the problem is I am not sure if my boss will allow the 3 months leave and the reason is to visit France.Thank you for the big help..God bless..
Hi aimmie, its your convincing power you should work out on,,i can’t help you out about your boss, your years of working would make him give you his yes, probably, i hope and pray to God that you will make it on your way to france, see you there!
Hi aimmie,
That is something you have to talk out with your boss. If your boss won’t allow you to go on leave for 3 months maybe you can meet half way and ask him what’s the maximum days that he can allow you to go on leave. And just settle to that I guess, since we don’t have much choice.
hi mitch tanong kulang sana pano pag unemployed ako kailangan ko ba talaga ng prove para bumalik ng pinas,,i dont own any properties ?ano ba dapat kung gawin?kasi mag aapply na ako next month pag dating ng papers ko?
Hi! Your blog is so helpful but there’s just one thing that I want to ask. If I’m applying for a visa and my boyfriend is gonna be the one to shoulder everything, do I still need to present a medical insurance or can I just use his medical insurance? I would really appreciate your help. Thank you :)
Hi Deborah, which country were you going to? I dont think medical insurance is needed when applying schengen visa, im not sure though if that is a requirement in the country you will apply to. But, travel insurance is one thing you really need even if you have your sponsor, you only need his bank cert or pay slip and copy of his contract to prove that he has a 12-months job per year.
Hi Mitch. Thank you for this. I’m planning to apply for a visa too/ Did you apply for a Private visit visa in that case of tourist pa din? What are the complete requirements that you submitted to them? Have you submitted a certificate of employment, bank accounts or your sponsor will be the one to provide those? Thank you! Your help would be much appreciated.
