What are the requirements in applying Schengen Visas?
1. Signed and filled up Schengen Visa Application Form (click this) with photo attached, plus 1 additional photo.
Photo Specification
- Color photo taken against white background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering
- The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
2. Valid passport with 3 months validity from the end of visa duration. Photo copy of valid and former visas, if any.
3. Cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip and detailed itinerary. If you don’t have this, you have to write one on the spot before they will accept your requirements. Here is the cover letter addressed to the Honorable Consul I made in 2007.
4. Details of your trip
- Round trip ticket reservation. Reservations only.
- Itinerary of the whole duration including departure and arrival dates.
- Accommodations – hotel vouchers, seriously. If you’re staying with a good friend who is a French resident/national, then you need them to provide you with something called Attestation d’accueil (Certificate of Board and Lodging) and your host’s national identity card or residence permit.
Why I said good friend?  Because it’s a lot of trouble for them to get this. If you have a French national host, just cut and paste below list for the document you needed from them.  These are basically records of their existence in France such as title of property or contract of lease, utility billing statement as address proof, bank statements, medical records, pay slip, and finally they have to go to the city hall to have all these certified. Like I said, lots of trouble. :)
The attestation d’accueil is a form needed to be presented to the City Hall with the following documents:
5. Proof of employment
- Certificate of employment stating monthly salary and approved leave of absence.
- If self employed, official business registration for current and previous year.
6. Proof of Income
- Income Tax Return
- Recent Bank Certification
- Photocopy of the last 3 months statement of Account of the same bank account.
- If someone other than yourself is paying for the the trip, then submit financial document of the sponsor instead.
7. Identity / Marital Status:
- Photocopy of First page of Passport and all relevant obtained visas
- Authenticated birth certificate from NSO. If married, bring photocopy of your marriage contract.
8. Travel insurance that covers the entire duration of your intended stay with minimun coverage EUR 30,000. The medical policies must state the following points :
- Medical attention and treatment will be given in case of illness or accident
- The injured or ill traveller can be transported home for treatment + body repatriation in case of death
- The insurance coverage is a least 30 000 euros (50 000 US dollars)
- The insurance must be valid for all 25 Schengen member states which should be listed on the policy
- The insurance company must be re-insured, the name of the re-insurer and his TOLL FREE phone number must be listed on the policy
- The policy must allow CASHLESS SETTLEMENTS of claims. The name of the company in charge of such settlements and their toll free number must be clearly stated on the policy.

hi… i hope you can help me… i was issued a schengen visa from the , valid from december 15, 2012 to march 14, 2013. duration of stay is for 90 days. i will be leaving in january 20 and my 90 days stay would start from that date right?

i think it is specified in your passport the validity of ur visa…if ur visa states that it is valid on dec 15 – march 14 (90), ur starting day is dec 15…not jan 20. if im not mistaken.
Hi Lil, Im Randy, i am planning to visit Norway this coming x-max, meron akong friend there, who invited me, and got his stamp from police office there, according to his invitation, he is my guarantor, and he will cover all my expenses. My problem is, i am a freelance wedding coordinator and computer tech. I dont have any payslip, but i have bank account, but i dont think its enough to cover my expenses. As what he told me, i dont need to worry about the expenses becoz he will cover everything, So i think its ok naman na, i will complete the requirements needed and i will apply to the embassy in person. Ask ko lang po, kelangan po ba bumili na ako ng insurance without assurance na makakakuha ako ng visa or, after i got the visa then its the time that i need to buy my insurance, and how much po. im super newbie about this visa thing, but i travel last sept. 2-8, 2012 to thailand with him. but you know Europe is different approach right I hope you, you could help me, about how much would cost for insurance for 90 days.
Thank you so much.! helpful and blog mo…:)
Why don’t u give one of the agent a call. I cannot remember how much but it should not be more than 5K pesos. I got mine last year 6 months coverage worldwide for bit less than 10K

What questions do visa officers ask applicants, usually? TIA
when i had my interview 2 weeks ago she only asked me when am i leaving then i told her oct 18th and what states am i going to visit, told her france luxembourg germany netherlands and belgium…and after checking my docs she told me it should be fine coz she asked her boss or someone at the back office. she scheduled me to go back to the consulate 5 business days to pick my passport up.. and as promised i got it and with the schengen visa on page 6 :)
Hi, just want to ask… Did you show them hotel reservations? Me and my friends are planning for inter-railing in Europe kasi. So, there’s no specific hotels I can decide unless if we go for a package inter-railing. Please hit me back. Thanks much.
If you don’t have hotel reservations, there is a huge chance of being denied visa.
Hi! i just want to ask, i got my visa – etats schengen type c entry:1, the original plan is to just stay in switzerland, but later decided to at least see the eiffel tower in paris…am i allowed to go to other schengen areas? i want to see rome as well but i had one entry, although ive read it somewhere that im allowed to enter other schengen states for as long as i dont exit the schengen area. can i visit other schengen territories even if i have a single entry? thnx!
u can go to all the 26 states. no border check between these countries. list all the countries.
Yey! thank you so much! i can visit all 26 in 90 days!
I normally don’t wear coat & tie even when I go to work, do you think I should make an exception for the interview?
no
No, meaning I shouldn’t wear coat & tie and smart casual would do? Please enlighten me. Thanks
No, I don’t think you should make an exception for the interview and wear coat + tie. Yes, smart casual will do. It’s not really an interview. It’s just a guy receiving and checking your requirement. He has no power whatsoever. But beware, he can be a bitch because he thinks he can. Good luck!
Hello, I’m in the process of collecting all requirements for application for Schengen tourist visa. I hope someone can help me clarify some questions I have :)
1.) According to the requirement, the consulate needs proof of plane ticket reservation. Since I’m planning to travel to several Schengen countries by low cost airlines and trains, do I have to reserve those tickets, too? Since low cost airlines need you to pay up from especially if online ko lang ipapareserve yung ticket. Or ang kailangan lang yung round trip ticket ko lang from Manila to Paris (my port of entry).
2.) Are they picky on the hotel reservation? Since I’m on a budget, I’m planning to reserve accomodation sa mga youth hostels lang.
3.) Any recommendation on which Travel insurance is the best? Marami kasing accredited but I want bang for my bucks :)
Thanks, guys! I hope someone can help with my questions. I needed the Europe break before I returned to the workforce, haha :)
(1)return tickets only (2)not picky (3)chartis
Thanks, wanderlass! I actually bit the bullet na dun sa mga low cost tickets, baka hindi ko na siya makuha once the visa got approved (fingers cross!) since October 30 pa yung appointment ko, and I’m planning to travel ng December.
Just some additional questions na lang:
1.) The duration of my trip is 12 days (including my departure and return to Manila). But the insurance company is saying that I should add an additional 15 days of coverage since some embassy requires this. In your experience, did the embassy require an additional days of coverage? The French embassy doesn’t have this indicated in their list of requirements but instead just says that the travel insurance should cover the entire period of my stay only.
2.) I’ll be spending my last night in Paris in CDG na lang sana for departure the next day since I’ll be arriving from Prague at 11 PM. But I am not intending to book a room in the nearby airport hotel or hostel anymore. Planning to spend a night in the airport since I’ve been doing this for other countries that I’ve traveled to. However, will this be a point against me if I don’t have a hotel book for the last night? Or if I booked a hotel and just cancel it once the visa is approved, would the consulate know? Thanks!
Actually never mind the first question. I was advised by the French embassy to add an additional 15 days coverage from my entire intended stay of travel. I guess that’s a head’s up na rin for your other readers :)
Much more interested about answer to question number 2 na lang :) Thanks so much!
no, they won’t know if you book and cancel. they don’t have enough manpower to monitor every single tourist. lol
If magstay ako hotel, do i need to present the hotel accomodation for the whole period of my stay?
they would normally ask for it
Hi wanderlass! I love your website it help me a lot when I apply for my schengen visa last year i went there last year for 3 months as a tourist and i will follow your steps on my application for UK visa this September. I keep looking at your website and I saw you been to united state as well, but for some reason I can’t find here on how you apply your US visa. I hope I can see your experience on how to apply for US visa too.
Thank you very much! And more power to you.
Hi, I’m really glad that this post has helped you. I have a 10yr US visa which I applied way before I started this Visa series. Pero sige, I try to come up with a US VISA Application post.
