What are the requirements in applying Schengen Visas?
1. Signed and filled up Schengen Visa Application Form (click this) with photo attached, plus 1 additional photo.
Photo Specification
- Color photo taken against white background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering
- The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
2. Valid passport with 3 months validity from the end of visa duration. Photo copy of valid and former visas, if any.
3. Cover letter explaining the purpose of your trip and detailed itinerary. If you don’t have this, you have to write one on the spot before they will accept your requirements. Here is the cover letter addressed to the Honorable Consul I made in 2007.
4. Details of your trip
- Round trip ticket reservation. Reservations only.
- Itinerary of the whole duration including departure and arrival dates.
- Accommodations – hotel vouchers, seriously. If you’re staying with a good friend who is a French resident/national, then you need them to provide you with something called Attestation d’accueil (Certificate of Board and Lodging) and your host’s national identity card or residence permit.
Why I said good friend?  Because it’s a lot of trouble for them to get this. If you have a French national host, just cut and paste below list for the document you needed from them.  These are basically records of their existence in France such as title of property or contract of lease, utility billing statement as address proof, bank statements, medical records, pay slip, and finally they have to go to the city hall to have all these certified. Like I said, lots of trouble. :)
The attestation d’accueil is a form needed to be presented to the City Hall with the following documents:
5. Proof of employment
- Certificate of employment stating monthly salary and approved leave of absence.
- If self employed, official business registration for current and previous year.
6. Proof of Income
- Income Tax Return
- Recent Bank Certification
- Photocopy of the last 3 months statement of Account of the same bank account.
- If someone other than yourself is paying for the the trip, then submit financial document of the sponsor instead.
7. Identity / Marital Status:
- Photocopy of First page of Passport and all relevant obtained visas
- Authenticated birth certificate from NSO. If married, bring photocopy of your marriage contract.
8. Travel insurance that covers the entire duration of your intended stay with minimun coverage EUR 30,000. The medical policies must state the following points :
- Medical attention and treatment will be given in case of illness or accident
- The injured or ill traveller can be transported home for treatment + body repatriation in case of death
- The insurance coverage is a least 30 000 euros (50 000 US dollars)
- The insurance must be valid for all 25 Schengen member states which should be listed on the policy
- The insurance company must be re-insured, the name of the re-insurer and his TOLL FREE phone number must be listed on the policy
- The policy must allow CASHLESS SETTLEMENTS of claims. The name of the company in charge of such settlements and their toll free number must be clearly stated on the policy.

Hi! I just read this post about the documents needed for the visa. What if I am only a fresh graduate wanting to take a tour in Europe? I have enough money saved for this trip but I am not employed yet.
Hello Wanderlass, just a quick question, any details on how to get a travel insurance? How much is the initial payment? Since you are experienced when it comes to travelling to Europe. I think your experience in completing the requirements is enough for me and my son to know how we can travel to netherlands.
Thank you, much appreciated.
Aldwin

Hi all! Just like to share my experiences.I just got my 3rd Schengen visa today and was shocked that they gave me 3 years multiple entry woaahhh :o
My first Schengen visa was from the French embassy, 3 months multiple entry, last December 2015. I applied with my dad and my brother. We were invited by my French boyfriend’s family to spend the holidays there. We presented all the requirements except for approved leaves from employer (my dad’s a retiree, my brother was just 2 weeks old in his job, me – I don’t know where to get it from my company haha). Although we had a letter of invitation from my boyfriend’s dad, we didn’t submit an attestation anymore because we rented our own Airbnb accomodation. We also didn’t need any financial documents from them because we will finance our trip personally. We were interviewed by a Filipina at the French embassy itself. She was really strict. 2 days later, we picked up our passport and got our first visas! :)
My 2nd visa was also from the French embassy, 1 month multiple entry, last April 2016. I applied alone, just to visit my boyfriend for 1 week (during his spring vacation). The process changed because the French embassy started to use the services of the VFS center. So there was no interview anymore. They just checked my requirements. They also had me answer a “Visiting boyfriend/girlfriend” form. It just had questions about how you and your partner met, how long you’ve been together, etc.
This time, I applied at the Netherlands embassy. I’m actually going to Latvia to spend Christmas with my French boyfriend who is currently an exchange student in Riga, Latvia. The Netherlands embassy is the one in charge of Latvia Schengen visa applications. I must say that they were stricter than the French embassy. But the one who interviewed me was really kind. They emailed me a week after my interview, asking for more supporting documents. I was actually nervous of the result. But woah, they gave me multiple entry visa valid for 3 years and 4 months. It feels so good :)
All of my schengen visa applications were DIY. Didn’t have any help from any travel agency. Some suggestions:
-I always use Qatar Airways’ free flight reservation for the roundtrip ticket reservation requirement. It expires after 2 days but I don’t think it matters. I think the embassy just wants to see your travel itinerary.
-Booking.com is my bestfriend for the hotel reservations. The attestation requirement is really difficult to get.I didn’t want to bother my boyfriend’s family so I always use hotel reservations even if I’m going to stay in their house.
-Be consistent in every information you include in your requirements. All the dates must match.
-Show them that you have good reasons to go back to the Philippines after your vacation.
-You don’t need to write a very articulate cover letter but make it as detailed as possible. Let them know that you’re really prepared for your trip. Tell them your intended dates of arrival and departure, your accomodations, your travel itineraries etc etc etc
Good luck! And thank you so much Wanderlass, you were a big help before I got used to these visa application processes :)
hi! My husband and I both seniors are booked for a 12day tour on Aug 21 to sept 1,2017 with EXPAT EXPLORE. We need a schengen and U.K ( it’s where the tour starts and likewise visit some friends) visas. When is the best time to file our visas? Which should be filed first, the U.K. or the schengen visa?
