UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders
It was a week ago that I revealed my RTW plans and the beginning of my quest for visas.  Every Filipino who have experienced applying visas to Japan, US and Europe (Schengen, UK) can relate to this agony.  I went through both before but it doesn’t get easier. Since I’m going through the whole process again, I thought I’d make an outline to give future Filipino applicants a starting point. Digging through pages and pages of requirements can truly cause nausea, no kidding. So here you go, a blow by blow account on how to apply for UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders.
UK VISA
The United Kingdom (UK) is composed of the following 4 countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.  As a Filipino passport holder, let it be a default to assume we needed visa to travel anywhere outside Southeast Asia. UK is no exception. There are several visa types but I’ll be focusing on Tourist Visa.  UK visa is applied through official partner VFS Global.
My focus will only be the application of UK Visa For Philippine Passport holders applying for TOURIST VISA. If you’re studying, working, marrying, or visiting family, I’m sure there’s a whole other bunch of stuff you need to prepare. I can’t help you with it, sorry.
Restrictions in visiting UK as a tourist:
- Visit to UK cannot be for more than six (6) months;
- Leave the UK at the end of your visit;
- Have enough money to support yourself during your stay in the UK without working or needing help from public funds.
- Will not take paid or unpaid employment.
- Will not marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership.
- Will not get private medical treatment.
When to Apply for UK Visa?
As with most countries, UK visa can be applied maximum of 3 months before intended entry.
Where to Apply for UK Visa?
There are 2 parts in UK Visa Application: (1) Online Application  (2) Appointment to submit biometric and supporting documents.
You’ll need to have in hand your passport, UK address (hotel booking or friend’s address), email address and begin your  online visa application.  You’ll need to go through the following:
- register for an account
- fill in the application form in English
- pay for the visa fee online (in most cases)
- print out your form
- book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre
You also need to:
- have all the supporting documents you need for your visa
- translate any supporting documents and include them with the originals if they aren’t in English
What to bring to the Appointment?
- A printed and signed copy of your online visa application form
- Your current valid passport  Note: The UK Border Agency will retain your passport until they have reached a decision on your visa application. Bear in mind if you have travel plans before going to UK.
- Previous passports
- Original supporting documents, with photocopies and translations
- Printed copy of the supporting document checklist
- Payment or proof of payment of visa application fee.
- 1 recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) according to below specification.
Photograph Strict Specification
- Taken against a light grey or cream background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons. The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
What are supporting documents?
Simply put, these are documents that show evidence that you have ties in the Philippines and that you are coming back–job, family ties, properties, etc.
Also documents that shows you are capable of supporting yourself while in UK without the need to find employment–Bank statements, certificates, employment payslip, credit cards, etc.
You also need to submit details of accommodation plans and trip itinerary. However, please don’t pay for your accommodation until visa is issued.
All these should be submitted during the appointment. No further documents will be accepted after. Now, while the absence of these documents may result in unsuccessful visa application, submission does not guarantee visa issuance. More info on UK Visa Supporting Document
If you’re not paying for your own way, or have friend(s) in UK who will support you, you should present them with the following documents:
- Valid Citizen/Residence ID or Passport
- Bank Statement
- Address and contact details
- Invitation letter stating their support
How much is UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders? Where to pay for UK Visa? (Updated 2-Sept-2014)
Tourist Visa {short term up to 6 months} costs £83 to apply.
Since December 17, 2012, visa fee can only be made online. It will form as part of the online application process. When all items are filled up, you will be directed to the website of WorldPay where you have the choice to pay with Visa or Mastercard. Â They no longer accept payment in person like I did before.
Waiting for Result
If there are no further delays (lacking or unverifiable document), you should have result in approximately 4-5 working days. Track your application through the free Application Status Tool.  You can collect documents personally or have the option to have it delivered to your home by paying Php 450. You also get an SMS saying it’s on its way.
Update: So lesson learned, if you are planning to visit in summer, you have to apply earlier. March and April is really hectic. I received mine in 15 days. This is also because of the Royal Wedding coming up on April 29, 2011.

UK Visa for Filipino Passport Holders kicks off the Visa for Pinoy Series I’m starting in this blog. Here’s hoping it will be a good starting point in your application. I had to go through labyrinth of information to get here.  I don’t have my visa yet but I’ll update often!  Now, moving on to a totally unrelated topic, this is my 100th post! :)
NOTES & UPDATE: I just came back from a very easy application submission. My schedule was for 9:40am and I was there 9:30am as the website suggested.  You have to reschedule if you’re more than 20 minutes late. Total wait time is about 2 hours but once my number is called, it took less than 5 minutes for them to check my documents and then another 5 minutes for them to take my biometric data.
Like I said I was there for 2 hours with about 80 people ahead of me. I saw a lot of people being sent back and forth to rearrange their document, or having to fill up more forms, or worse, being asked to come back. Here are few notes to guarantee you out in a jiffy!
- No need to submit photocopy your application form and passports. They’ll ask you to take it out. Save trees too!
- Paste the photo on to the application form. Not stapled, not taped, but pasted.
- Print copy of the supporting document checklist and check (tick) those supporting document that you’re submitting.  Some people didn’t, so they have to fill this up when there.
- Arrange document in the order presented on the checklist.
- Bring original supporting documents and have a photocopy of them.  I don’t know how many people had to go out and have their document photocopied. Note that you will leave with them ALL your original document (land title, lease document, business registration, bank statements, financial statement, etc.) to be returned with your visa.
- You can only go in with your documents placed in an envelope. Bags and phones will have to be left at their package counter (at the guard). Â So much more consideration than the US Embassy.

But i the vip manager told me that i can refund my previous expired application online bit when i tried to make a resubmission, we didint see the refund section or button so i did not continue the application form online. hi! i am student visa holder before, i arrived in UK 2010 then i went back home 2012 before my visa expired. Now I am planning to apply again but as a tourist this coming christmas for 2 weeks. Is there a big chance for me for approval of my application by the consul? I am a regular employee now and i earned 25k a month and I have 400k in my bank. what do you think?
Hi ya. have a go there’s no harm on trying. we’re on the same boat i’m planning to apply a general tourist visa soon. hopefully they will grant me. good luck!
I got an email today from vfs stating that “your visa application decision will be dispatched shortly.” Does this mean that my visa has been denied?
it means you will find out soon.
Yes i know it sounds silly but i have read a lot of blogs saying that whenever this is the message they receive, usually it means it is refused.
I just like to know if you ever encountered someone in this thread to have received the same email and what did they tell you about their results.
Hi Rose Anne! I wonder what’s the update about your application? When did you apply btw? I submitted mine last Sept 24 2014 and until now, I haven’t received an email from them. Not even a confirmation if they have received my application. It’s been 5 days already though. I hope I get it within 10 days because I look forward to doing the trip in fall. :/ I don’t want to miss the fall colours. I hope it wont really take 3 weeks or I might miss the opportunity to go there….
Submitted mine last September 24 too! Any update with your application? Thanks!
Hi winterheartspeaks!
You can email or call the UKVI with regards to your application status. You can expect a reply from them after a day.
And about my visa application,
I received the result of my application last September 25 with all the docs I submitted for my application.
Unfortunately, my visa application was REFUSED.
However, after finding a mistake on the visa decision, I immediately filed for an Administrative Review. And after a week, I received a very good news that the decision was overturned and my request for an AR was successful.
They requested for my passport last Friday and now I am just waiting for it to be mailed back to me with the visa.
I just like to take this opportunity also to ask if anyone here knows how long does it usually take for the UKVI to stamp or place a visa on a passport?
Hi winterheartspeaks,
How did you apply for an administrative review? And would you mind me asking why your visa was turned down?
Thanks
Hi Rose Anne C.,
For how many days did you have to wait for you to get your refused application?
And, what kind of email did you get on your approval? Thanks!
Hi rose ann c, did you apply for tourist visa? and how did you apply for administrative review? pls reply. thanks
Hi rose ann, i got refused too! But i want to re-apply.. Parehas lang ba yan administrative review sa re-apply? And how do you do that diba may papa fill up sila jan then san isesend? Sa vfs ba ulit? And how long bago natangap ulit ung passport . Thankyou hoping for your reply..
Hi Dianne,
I wonder how your administrative review went? Hope you can share what was the reason for your visa application refusal, if the decision has been overturned and how long did the process took. Thanks!
HELLO WANDERLASS,I APPLIED ON LINE APPLICATION AND SUBMITTED ALREADY,DECLARED THERE MY HUSBAND WILL TRAVEL WITH ME,EVERYTHING IN THE FORM WAS COMPLETED,THEN I PROCEED TO PAYMENT,PAYING THE SCHEDULE,I ENTERED MY GWF NUMBER,IT WAS OK,BUT WHEN I AM ENTERING AGAIN TO PAY FOR MY HUSBAND I CANNOT ENTER THE SAME GWF NUMBER,,,WHAT SHOULD I DO?IS IT IF MY HUSBAND WILL TRAVEL WITH ME,NORMALLY I PAY ONLY FOR 1 PERSON OR JUST FOR ME ?HOW MUCH THE VISA NOW?
THANK YOU.
need po ba ang NBI clearance at NSO borth cert. pag nag apply ng tourist visa in uk?
Rose Ann, Congratulations. :) Bon Voyage.
I want to ask how long it took them to give you their decision? It’s my 10th day now (Submitted my application on Sept 24, at VFK global Ecoplaza Makati), still no feedback from them. Will gladly appreciate your insight on it.
Another question is that, did you file for a General Visitor Visa? Are your papers sponsored, too? Im kind of worried. I will be traveling there with my friend together with his family and he will be financing my entire trip, as what was stated in his letter. They probably are more strict in cases like mine. Hopefully not. I pray I receive the results soon.
1. Wonder how long it usually take them to process GVV in cases like mine who has no relatives or immediate connection to the UK? It says in their website that 97% of application get processed within 10 days. I hope I belong in that percentage. How about you, fellow applicants?
2. Is there no working passport tracking tool from UK-Manila embassy? I guess I’ve tried so many links but none of them works.
3. I emailed them and they keep saying that my application is yet to be processed. It’s been 10 days now. Could it be that they haven’t even touched my application?
Hay. :/ I haven’t received any email from them yet. At least I want to know what stage is my application on now. This is stressing me out :DD
Hi Winter heart speaks, have u received any update from them regarding your visa application. I have also applied on the same day for a GVV and waiting for their decision.
Usually what will be the email reply from them for a positive and negative decision made by them on the visa application. ..any idea…
These are few nail biting moments especially when we have already a plan in place and waiting anxiously for the results..reminds me of the examination days in our schools and colleges…..
Phewww…only prayer is that the EOC should be in a good mood while reviewing the applications….
Sham,
I have received an email from them after 12 working days, which is the minimum. So glad that waiting time is over because I have to do the trip soon. I will claim the passport on Monday at Ecoplaza Makati. The email I received on the 12th day were:
1. From UKVI: Your decision will be despatched shortly. Passports can normally be collected from the Visa Application Centre after 3 working days unless you have been advised it will be returned by courier or have paid an additional courier fee.
2. From VFSGlobal: The processed visa application for GWF reference number – GWFXXXXXwas received at the UK Visa Application Centre on 10/10/2014 2:27 PM . If a courier service was purchased from VFS Global, your processed application will be delivered to the chosen address.
I received notice both from UK Visa Hub and VFSGlobal on the same day (Friday, 12th working day, so I had to painfully worry and wait on the weekend until Monday). I can only hope that they’ll give me this opportunity because I, myself, believe I do not have very good financial statements and bank accounts. Other than that, I have no problems. I am employed, with previous travel experiences, had previous passports and ties to go back to. Hay…I just pray the ECO understood and nice to consider me.
Sham, don’t worry, iba iba din tayo ng ECO na nag ccheck :P Assessment process may vary on every applicant. You will really receive an email from them or you can email the uk customer embassy service for updates. Actually, I did that 5 times before I got answer from UKVI. Sobrang nag mamadali kasi ako.
Tip, Do not worry so much and just check your email day and night. Wala nmn tayo talaga magagawa even if we worry so much. Just relax and wait (I know it’s hard…)
Goodluck, Sham..
Hi winterheart speaks! I would like to ask what time did the UKVI emailed you?
Hi everybody. After waiting for the 12th working day, I finally received my UK Visa.
It’s about being patient. Yun lang talaga magagawa natin. :)
Great news winter heart. ..congrats…my 12th working day will be over today n hopefully tomorrow I will receive some update….wish u a sweet trip to uk n enjoy….
Hello. Can i ask some question. What are the specific documents i need to prepare.. my boyfriend will sponsor my trip to uk ..i am just confused.PLEASE HELP ME
.
Hello #winterheartspeaks.. i just want to ask. Im planning to visit UK with a sponsor from London, do i have to present his original documents or only the photocopy? PLEASE i need your help. We will be applying next week. To those who could read this and know the info please let me know. It would be a great help.Thank you so much!

can you choose a date? because when i return from a flight abroad as well, i’ll go directly to the embassy if ever. –so is there an option for a date or they will give you a certain date and you just have to be there?
they will give you the first available date and if you’re not available then you have to choose a later date.
hi wanderlass.. is there any person that I can contact to inquire.. I’m interested to travel in UK but the problem is I dont have any person to contact.. hoping to hear from you soon.. thank you..

Hi. I’m planning to submit my application hopefully next week. It’s for a general VISA sponsored by someone in England. Do I need to have his original passport and other documents when scheduled for an interview or the appointment? Also, is the appointment in Manila or I can visit the Cebu Consulate instead since Im in Cebu. Thank you and hope to hear from you.
Hello jacky # can i ask? What are the specific documents you submitted ?
Hi. No need for the original passport from your sponsor. Have you done your application?

Hi wanderlass, can I apply tourist visa directly to the UK embassy?
Hi wanderlass , this is actually not about tourist visa but just in case you know the answers about my inquiry .. I will be applying for my Spousal Visa to UK soon (as I’m married to a British guy) but I have a bit of worried kasi we have 2 kids po 4 and 2 years old both Philippines passports holder. Plan na lang po sana namin mag asawa to apply their british passport when we get to UK .. Ngayon po my question is will they be able to travel with me under my spousal visa using only their P.i passports? or we will have to apply their own visa? if yes , what kind of visa po? All your answers will be highly appreciated po. Thanks !
