UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders
It was a week ago that I revealed my RTW plans and the beginning of my quest for visas. Every Filipino who have experienced applying visas to Japan, US and Europe (Schengen, UK) can relate to this agony. I went through both before but it doesn’t get easier. Since I’m going through the whole process again, I thought I’d make an outline to give future Filipino applicants a starting point. Digging through pages and pages of requirements can truly cause nausea, no kidding. So here you go, a blow by blow account on how to apply for UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders.
UK VISA
The United Kingdom (UK) is composed of the following 4 countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. As a Filipino passport holder, let it be a default to assume we needed visa to travel anywhere outside Southeast Asia. UK is no exception. There are several visa types but I’ll be focusing on Tourist Visa. UK visa is applied through official partner VFS Global.
My focus will only be the application of UK Visa For Philippine Passport holders applying for TOURIST VISA. If you’re studying, working, marrying, or visiting family, I’m sure there’s a whole other bunch of stuff you need to prepare. I can’t help you with it, sorry.
Restrictions in visiting UK as a tourist:
- Visit to UK cannot be for more than six (6) months;
- Leave the UK at the end of your visit;
- Have enough money to support yourself during your stay in the UK without working or needing help from public funds.
- Will not take paid or unpaid employment.
- Will not marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership.
- Will not get private medical treatment.
When to Apply for UK Visa?
As with most countries, UK visa can be applied maximum of 3 months before intended entry.
Where to Apply for UK Visa?
There are 2 parts in UK Visa Application: (1) Online Application (2) Appointment to submit biometric and supporting documents.
You’ll need to have in hand your passport, UK address (hotel booking or friend’s address), email address and begin your online visa application. You’ll need to go through the following:
- register for an account
- fill in the application form in English
- pay for the visa fee online (in most cases)
- print out your form
- book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre
You also need to:
- have all the supporting documents you need for your visa
- translate any supporting documents and include them with the originals if they aren’t in English
What to bring to the Appointment?
- A printed and signed copy of your online visa application form
- Your current valid passport Note: The UK Border Agency will retain your passport until they have reached a decision on your visa application. Bear in mind if you have travel plans before going to UK.
- Previous passports
- Original supporting documents, with photocopies and translations
- Printed copy of the supporting document checklist
- Payment or proof of payment of visa application fee.
- 1 recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) according to below specification.
Photograph Strict Specification
- Taken against a light grey or cream background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons. The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
What are supporting documents?
Simply put, these are documents that show evidence that you have ties in the Philippines and that you are coming back–job, family ties, properties, etc.
Also documents that shows you are capable of supporting yourself while in UK without the need to find employment–Bank statements, certificates, employment payslip, credit cards, etc.
You also need to submit details of accommodation plans and trip itinerary. However, please don’t pay for your accommodation until visa is issued.
All these should be submitted during the appointment. No further documents will be accepted after. Now, while the absence of these documents may result in unsuccessful visa application, submission does not guarantee visa issuance. More info on UK Visa Supporting Document
If you’re not paying for your own way, or have friend(s) in UK who will support you, you should present them with the following documents:
- Valid Citizen/Residence ID or Passport
- Bank Statement
- Address and contact details
- Invitation letter stating their support
How much is UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders? Where to pay for UK Visa? (Updated 2-Sept-2014)
Tourist Visa {short term up to 6 months} costs £83 to apply.
Since December 17, 2012, visa fee can only be made online. It will form as part of the online application process. When all items are filled up, you will be directed to the website of WorldPay where you have the choice to pay with Visa or Mastercard. They no longer accept payment in person like I did before.
Waiting for Result
If there are no further delays (lacking or unverifiable document), you should have result in approximately 4-5 working days. Track your application through the free Application Status Tool. You can collect documents personally or have the option to have it delivered to your home by paying Php 450. You also get an SMS saying it’s on its way.
Update: So lesson learned, if you are planning to visit in summer, you have to apply earlier. March and April is really hectic. I received mine in 15 days. This is also because of the Royal Wedding coming up on April 29, 2011.

UK Visa for Filipino Passport Holders kicks off the Visa for Pinoy Series I’m starting in this blog. Here’s hoping it will be a good starting point in your application. I had to go through labyrinth of information to get here. I don’t have my visa yet but I’ll update often! Now, moving on to a totally unrelated topic, this is my 100th post! :)
NOTES & UPDATE: I just came back from a very easy application submission. My schedule was for 9:40am and I was there 9:30am as the website suggested. You have to reschedule if you’re more than 20 minutes late. Total wait time is about 2 hours but once my number is called, it took less than 5 minutes for them to check my documents and then another 5 minutes for them to take my biometric data.
Like I said I was there for 2 hours with about 80 people ahead of me. I saw a lot of people being sent back and forth to rearrange their document, or having to fill up more forms, or worse, being asked to come back. Here are few notes to guarantee you out in a jiffy!
- No need to submit photocopy your application form and passports. They’ll ask you to take it out. Save trees too!
- Paste the photo on to the application form. Not stapled, not taped, but pasted.
- Print copy of the supporting document checklist and check (tick) those supporting document that you’re submitting. Some people didn’t, so they have to fill this up when there.
- Arrange document in the order presented on the checklist.
- Bring original supporting documents and have a photocopy of them. I don’t know how many people had to go out and have their document photocopied. Note that you will leave with them ALL your original document (land title, lease document, business registration, bank statements, financial statement, etc.) to be returned with your visa.
- You can only go in with your documents placed in an envelope. Bags and phones will have to be left at their package counter (at the guard). So much more consideration than the US Embassy.

Hello, I just got hired-my employer in London asked me to look into the fastest process for me to get a visa. DO you think I should apply for Tourist Visa then have my employer sponsor or a work permit is a must at this point? Thanks for your help.
If you go to UK with a tourist visa, by law, you are not allowed to change it to any other kind of visa, Unless you go back to Philippines and re apply for a different category
Hello miss, magkano po ung bayad niyo sa application? Ayun na ba po yung bayad sa visa mismo? thanks po
Hi,
I came across your blog and I have got more information I need. I have questions though. I hope you can help me as I have a slightly complicated situation. I will be applying for the same visa to be sponsored by my British cousin (we are first cousins. His mom and my dad are siblings):
1. My sister applied for a UK visa (was sponsored by our British cousin) but she was rejected because she does not have a proof that they were cousins. She advised to submit birth certificates of our aunt (our British cousin’s mother); our British cousin’s; hers and our dad’s. The problem is, our aunt (his mom) does not have a birth certificate. Question, do you any other proof that we can present to show that we’re indeed related? We have pictures together whenever he visits the country. Would that suffice?
2. How can I possibly establish my family and socio-economic ties when I am technically unemployed and doesn’t have any business nor lands owned? I left my job last May 2015 because I have to watch over my dad (who is a senior citizen) coz all my siblings are staying in the university dorm during school days. I have regular source of income every month by doing a research job ( appearing as remittance to my bank account) from my British cousin.
3. I have only traveled in six countries in the Southeast Asian region, all of them are visa-free. I will just go to UK because my cousin wants to tour me around. I’m staying there for one or two weeks only. Do you think I have a chance to be approved?
Thanks a lot in advance!
put on a cover letter explaining that u have gathered the birth certificates and that your aunt doesnt have one because etc etc. just be detailed. maybe if your cousin has birth certificate and her name appears to theirs its enough proof that ur aunt is their legitimate mother. i myself is not employed and does not have biz lands owned plus no bank accounts! but if you are going to school its enough evidence youre going to come back you have to just provide a proof and leave for them to conclude you will come back. i showed to them im financially independent to my parents so i just provided affidavit of support and my parents financial docus coz i aint got one but my boyfriend is my sponsor to begin with and he’s a british citizen. hmmm i also have travelled outside w/ fam in sg malaysia indonesia then australia. if u have been outside our country its already good. :) its not subject to refusal if you haven’t travelled yet just prove them your intention to visit UK is genuine thats all.
financially dependent to my parents *
Thanks Justine! I have not started applying yet. Hopefully I will get approved soon.
Hi Miss Ai!
This blog was such a big help to me. Thank you for sharing your experience with UK Visit Visa as I got mine stamped on my passport (multiple entries). God bless you! Happy holidays ?

Hi Ms. Wanderlass. You are a blessing to a lot of people because of your blog. I have learned a lot from your post.
I thought of asking you about my dilemma hoping you have some ideas that you can share to me. My parents and sister applied for a UK visa and it was approved 6 months multiple. Our dilemma is that the validity date written was dec 5 2015 to jun 6 2016. In their application.. intended date to enter UK is on May 5 2016. They applied in advance (submitted the application nov 25) because they plan to also apply for canadian visa. It was stated in the application that they intend to go to canada in august 2016 and then back to UK again after a month then go back to phil on oct 2016. We are wondering why the validity date given was dec 2015. My question is.. is there a way to request for a change of the validity date? Planned dates are all declared naman in the application. And in case we request for a change of date (in case it is feasible) i just feel scared that they might reacted negatively on our request (paranoid lang) and might mess up the approved visa? Hope you have an idea on how we can deal with our dilemma. Thanks in advance.
By the way, we still wanted sana the original plan which is may 2016.. instead of changing our plan and leaning to the validity date they have given. This is because of the weather.. at least by May hindi na masyado malamig and secondly.. we have enough time pa sana to apply for canadian visa.
Hi! Just came across your blog because I’m helping my boyfriend apply for his visa and I’m seriously confused.
I’m a dual citizen (British & Filipino) so I’m clueless when it comes to applying for a visa and I’ve searched everywhere for help. I’m unsure whether my boyfriend should be applying for a tourist visa or family visa. We’ll just be going for 2 weeks, but at the end of the application, the question that asks ‘will you be staying with a close relative’ bla bla comes up. We’ll be staying at my family’s residence, but we aren’t legally considered ‘family’ as we aren’t married yet.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for any suggestions and advise in advance, it would be of great help!
Joanna
P.S I did try to call their hotline, but I felt a bit iffy when they asked me for my credit card number. They said they had to charge a fee before they could answer my question -_-
Hello, I just want to ask if it is allowed that my friend will sponsor me for my settlement because my husband is under disability and can not work?
Hello po! I love your blog. Your posts are very informative and helpful. :)
I have a few questions though. My British boyfriend of almost 10 months now is inviting me to join him and his family this Christmas and he’ll be sponsoring me (from airfare to accommodations). I haven’t met him yet but he’s flying in for a weeks stay here in the country tomorrow and he’ll be accompanying me when i process my visa. My situation is I’m 22, I’ve never traveled abroad and still a student. I don’t have credit cards, only a savings account (which doesn’t have much inside). My problem is I’ll be leaving during Christmas break but I will be back for the next semester this January since I’ll be graduating this June or July. And I don’t have everything on the checklist (i lack bank statements, bills under my name, etc). Will my boyfriend’s documents and presence be enough to support my application? If not, what do I provide? And can he apply for the visa on my behalf when he’s here?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Anyone willing to share their experience with me or offer any advice, I’d gladly appreciate it. Just email me: ellenaciongayo@school@gmail.com
Hi Danielle,
Please note, your BF cannot accompany you inside the UK Consulate. Application is all done via online and the only time you are going to UK Consulate is when you submit your docs+biometrics and when you collect back your docs after the decision from UK IO is done.
Link below should help you what documents you needed to be able to apply for a UK Tourist Visa.

Hi Danielle & Ai! Was checking Google on how long it’ll take to get a UK tourist visa. My online boyfriend from Scotland & his sister wants to petition me for a visit this coming March 20 to be with my boyfriend on his birthday ( March 21 ). I’m starting to do the processing now, just waiting for the release of my passport renewal ( January 14, 2016 ) then will start the visa application online. My questions are, 1) how long will it take for a visa to be granted?, 2) I am not working at the moment, previously worked in Manila ( 2003 ) & tried to get a company’s certificate of employment but the said company was closed already, so I can’t show any of certificate of employment coz it’s impossible to secure any, 3) my boyfriend wish that if it’s possible I could come earlier there ( February 2016 ) but I’m worried & not sure about how long visa will be granted, 4) if I can’t show any certificate of employment, does having a letter of invitation from my boyfriend & his sister is enough basis that I won’t be denied on the interview?… pls I am worrying for a lot of things. It’s my first time to travel outside the country & not really sure if we can make it… I’m going to Cebu city on the 4th of January for my CFO seminar to get a certificateof attendance which my friend said is required to all Filipino spouses/fiance’s before they exit. Just waiting for my passport & then will start visa application online.
Any info is highly appreciated. Anyone from Scotland?
Thanks,
Janella
HI Janella, Just wanna ask if you were able to apply and did you get a visa? Like you, am also wondering how it works as I don’t have a savings myself but my scottish bf is sponsoring me. I would appreciate your comment a lot
Hi Jhoann… I appreciate your msg.. I’m still working on my visa processing at the moment but hoping I can travel on feb25 if all papers are done & hopefully visa will be granted. Pls do write me, it would be nice to correspond from there! Thanks, Janella
Hi Janella, how was your application? I have almost the same situation. Has your visa been granted? My appointment is 2 weeks from now. I just wanna know what happened to yours,
Hello! I already got my visa thanks to your blog post. Now I just need to know where to get the GBP best.
Yayy! Congrats babe. I normally go to a bank and just buy there. No hassle but at least I’ll get it within the day. Rate might be a weeny bit expensive compared to FX outside but really no difference at all. ☺️
Ai
Hello Ai,
I have a visit visa for 6 months…now what I need to know is, apart from the passport, visa, ticket and boarding pass, what other documents do our Philippine Immigration asks when you go through the passport control.
Thanks.
Hi Peps,
You’re all good. Our Phils IO don’t ask much really. UK IO would definitely need ask some documents/proofs when you get to UK. Just make sure you got them with you just incase they ask (normally for first time UK travellers).
Have fun!
Ai
Hello miss Ai,

HI Ann,
Pls see link on how to obtain a Transit Visa. I personally haven’t tried to apply this type of visa so my information is very limited, my apologies. But the link below should give you all the information you needed. There are quite few options depending on your flight itineraries.
Keep on researching! Hit me up a msg at IG, latexcorsetph

Hi, your blog is very helpful.. I’m just wondering whether you could advise me. I lived in UK with my EU husband. I want to invite my sister to come over to UK however all my documents are with the immigrations as I am processing my residence card. Would it be possible if my husband will sponsor my sister? Does my husband needs to send all his original documents like his passport or EU card in the Philippines? and would it be possible if I can process my sisters visa on line so I can make a payment on behalf of her? Thank you in advance.
Hi!
It think he can sponsor your sister. No need to send his original pp or IDs. letter of invitation and photocopies of his pp, IDs and supporting docs would be totally fine.
You need to go to UK visa online website and register. Your husband can actually apply the visa on behalf of her if that’s easier for you. Hope that helps!?
Am on IG as latexcorsetph if you want to get hold of me. :)
Best of luck! X
Hi Ms. Ai,
Im just confuse on the letter on invitation, does it have to be an original copy? Or signed scanned copy sent through email is enough? Thanks?
