UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders
It was a week ago that I revealed my RTW plans and the beginning of my quest for visas. Every Filipino who have experienced applying visas to Japan, US and Europe (Schengen, UK) can relate to this agony. I went through both before but it doesn’t get easier. Since I’m going through the whole process again, I thought I’d make an outline to give future Filipino applicants a starting point. Digging through pages and pages of requirements can truly cause nausea, no kidding. So here you go, a blow by blow account on how to apply for UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders.
UK VISA
The United Kingdom (UK) is composed of the following 4 countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. As a Filipino passport holder, let it be a default to assume we needed visa to travel anywhere outside Southeast Asia. UK is no exception. There are several visa types but I’ll be focusing on Tourist Visa. UK visa is applied through official partner VFS Global.
My focus will only be the application of UK Visa For Philippine Passport holders applying for TOURIST VISA. If you’re studying, working, marrying, or visiting family, I’m sure there’s a whole other bunch of stuff you need to prepare. I can’t help you with it, sorry.
Restrictions in visiting UK as a tourist:
- Visit to UK cannot be for more than six (6) months;
- Leave the UK at the end of your visit;
- Have enough money to support yourself during your stay in the UK without working or needing help from public funds.
- Will not take paid or unpaid employment.
- Will not marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership.
- Will not get private medical treatment.
When to Apply for UK Visa?
As with most countries, UK visa can be applied maximum of 3 months before intended entry.
Where to Apply for UK Visa?
There are 2 parts in UK Visa Application: (1) Online Application (2) Appointment to submit biometric and supporting documents.
You’ll need to have in hand your passport, UK address (hotel booking or friend’s address), email address and begin your online visa application. You’ll need to go through the following:
- register for an account
- fill in the application form in English
- pay for the visa fee online (in most cases)
- print out your form
- book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre
You also need to:
- have all the supporting documents you need for your visa
- translate any supporting documents and include them with the originals if they aren’t in English
What to bring to the Appointment?
- A printed and signed copy of your online visa application form
- Your current valid passport Note: The UK Border Agency will retain your passport until they have reached a decision on your visa application. Bear in mind if you have travel plans before going to UK.
- Previous passports
- Original supporting documents, with photocopies and translations
- Printed copy of the supporting document checklist
- Payment or proof of payment of visa application fee.
- 1 recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) according to below specification.
Photograph Strict Specification
- Taken against a light grey or cream background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons. The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
What are supporting documents?
Simply put, these are documents that show evidence that you have ties in the Philippines and that you are coming back–job, family ties, properties, etc.
Also documents that shows you are capable of supporting yourself while in UK without the need to find employment–Bank statements, certificates, employment payslip, credit cards, etc.
You also need to submit details of accommodation plans and trip itinerary. However, please don’t pay for your accommodation until visa is issued.
All these should be submitted during the appointment. No further documents will be accepted after. Now, while the absence of these documents may result in unsuccessful visa application, submission does not guarantee visa issuance. More info on UK Visa Supporting Document
If you’re not paying for your own way, or have friend(s) in UK who will support you, you should present them with the following documents:
- Valid Citizen/Residence ID or Passport
- Bank Statement
- Address and contact details
- Invitation letter stating their support
How much is UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders? Where to pay for UK Visa? (Updated 2-Sept-2014)
Tourist Visa {short term up to 6 months} costs £83 to apply.
Since December 17, 2012, visa fee can only be made online. It will form as part of the online application process. When all items are filled up, you will be directed to the website of WorldPay where you have the choice to pay with Visa or Mastercard. They no longer accept payment in person like I did before.
Waiting for Result
If there are no further delays (lacking or unverifiable document), you should have result in approximately 4-5 working days. Track your application through the free Application Status Tool. You can collect documents personally or have the option to have it delivered to your home by paying Php 450. You also get an SMS saying it’s on its way.
Update: So lesson learned, if you are planning to visit in summer, you have to apply earlier. March and April is really hectic. I received mine in 15 days. This is also because of the Royal Wedding coming up on April 29, 2011.

UK Visa for Filipino Passport Holders kicks off the Visa for Pinoy Series I’m starting in this blog. Here’s hoping it will be a good starting point in your application. I had to go through labyrinth of information to get here. I don’t have my visa yet but I’ll update often! Now, moving on to a totally unrelated topic, this is my 100th post! :)
NOTES & UPDATE: I just came back from a very easy application submission. My schedule was for 9:40am and I was there 9:30am as the website suggested. You have to reschedule if you’re more than 20 minutes late. Total wait time is about 2 hours but once my number is called, it took less than 5 minutes for them to check my documents and then another 5 minutes for them to take my biometric data.
Like I said I was there for 2 hours with about 80 people ahead of me. I saw a lot of people being sent back and forth to rearrange their document, or having to fill up more forms, or worse, being asked to come back. Here are few notes to guarantee you out in a jiffy!
- No need to submit photocopy your application form and passports. They’ll ask you to take it out. Save trees too!
- Paste the photo on to the application form. Not stapled, not taped, but pasted.
- Print copy of the supporting document checklist and check (tick) those supporting document that you’re submitting. Some people didn’t, so they have to fill this up when there.
- Arrange document in the order presented on the checklist.
- Bring original supporting documents and have a photocopy of them. I don’t know how many people had to go out and have their document photocopied. Note that you will leave with them ALL your original document (land title, lease document, business registration, bank statements, financial statement, etc.) to be returned with your visa.
- You can only go in with your documents placed in an envelope. Bags and phones will have to be left at their package counter (at the guard). So much more consideration than the US Embassy.

Hi wanderlass, I’m going to visit my sister in London on December, she’s a staff nurse in a govt. hospital in Crawley. I was worried that they might denied my application. I’m currently a student but my father provided me money every month since he’s a seafarer so financially i am stable even without the help of my sister. Do i have a better chances if I apply without my sister support? Ayokong ma-deny kasi ang mahal ng application. Thank you!
Hi good day! Thanks for your blog, I’m planning to visit the U.K. this summer, I only have some questions. As a Supporting document, Regarding the flight itinerary, do I need to buy an airline ticket already or just an Itinierary Flight plan that I will construct?
And also the Hotel accomodation, Do I need to Book a hotel already to show confirmation as supporting document, or just an accomodation plan of where I am thinking of staying on the days of my visit.
Thanks alot in advance!
Rain
Hi Rain,
Itinerary schedule is totally fine. They actually advise not to book any airline ticket not until you get the visa.
As for the accommodation, you might have to book a refundable hotel accommodation just to be safe. Or use your sponsor/friend’s address if you have any or where you are intending to stay when in UK.
Hope that helps,
Ai
Hello ai, good afternoon ask ko lang po sana mam kung pano process ng invitation letter, kung isesend nya po ba saken to show in embassy in manila or he needs it to show in embassy in uk? Pls hope to hear from u, thank u in advance!
Hi there
A very good article indeed and very helpful(including all the comments) Anyone here could advice or help me with my query. I am going to apply for a visitor visa, will travel with my boyfriend and he will support all the expenses. He is a British citizen who is working in Manila. I do have work however I am not sure how much would I need to have in my account for them to consider(any idea or estimate amount) and what other documents do I need to submit that could help
Thanking you in advance guys :)
Hello Miss Ai,
Im single mum here seperated for long time not yet annulled and now i have a British bf who wanted me to get a Uk visa does it affect, do u think being married would affect me in getting a visa? And one thing more is im using my maiden name in my passport but some of my valid id’s r still my ex hubbys name would still affect also? Pls help me Miss Ai, thank u have a nice day!
hi tnx for this very helpful post. here’s my case though, my 2 yr old daughter is a US citizen like her dad (we are not yet married), dad is planning to treat us to a tour at UK to visit his brother (who has not seen our daughter yet), right now my daughter and i are here in manila, dad is in the US (working), if I apply for uk visa, what is my approval rate if my primary reason is to accompany my minor child? i am currently a full time mom, doing freelance work from time to time, but i get regular remittance fr her dad who will sponsor the entire trip.
It’s always a 50-50 chance applying for a UK visa. Just make sure you comply all the requirements as their decision would depend on the documents you are providing to them. Best of luck! X
Hi Ai, I’m a US RESIDENT (greencard holder) but for the mean time i’m here in the phils. I’m employed by our church here in the phils as a youth leader. I always go back and forth To US. I will be applying for a visit visa to accompany my bestfriend in her studies for 2weeks and also have a tour. I will be applying here in the phils.
My question is:
1.is there a big chance of getting a UK visa since I’m a US resident?
2. will they question that my COE because the signatory is my dad? (President/pastor)
3. what can you suggest? Since i’m just a youth leader my salary is not that big but there are people who gives support monthly.
Thanks! Hope you can help me with this!
Hi! My partner got her UK tourist visa approved (6 months). Can she book a ticket departing from PH this February and return to PH on June? So that she could prepare for the immigration queries.
*Her parents are UK Citizen.
*1st time to travel in UK.
*31 yrs. old
Thank you!
Hi Karlo,
I can’t see why not. She’s got her visa already as you mentioned, so it shouldn’t be a problem getting to UK.
Hi there. from the day i started thinking of getting a visit visa for UK coz my boyfriend wanted me to visit him(we never met yet) and he will support my whole stay…i would like to share my experience guys:) to start this… i am really worried from the start if i could even obtain a visa from UK coz im still a COLLEGE student purely dependent to my parents hahaha and bankless( meaning got no accounts whatever in the bank or savings) so totally no money kasi dependent nga. what the good thing is i got other stamps on my passport also had australia visit visa too coz of my parents when we go travel during holidays.. thats the catch for me. anyway so ive been researching intensely. day and night NO TULOG from the day i lodge my application onine.. just to make sure my questions are being answered and what right docus i need to gather. i even research about refusals so i could have idea what i can avoid. so there you go. i saw this blog from the very start and it was helpful indeed… i started reading the comments from top to bottom to get a more thoughts. ive been stressing my bf also hahaha kulit ko kasi sa sobrang stressed. so anyway here are the docus i submitted sa VFS.. btw i availed their priority service and super fast service, i availed the vip premium lounge too coz i hate waiting loads.
btw my boyfriend doesnt want to use our relationship in the visa processing he just told me ill tell in my application he is just a friend so we wont be gathering more docus just to prove our relationship and less suspicion na din from uk consulate kasi mas paghihinalaan nila pag couples as far as i know.
docus i had passed:
-passport w/ visas and stamp
-cover letter
-affidavit of support from my parents
-birthcertificate just to prove theyre my parents
-my parents bank certificate
-parents 5 months bank statement
-parents ITR
-parents business permit
-school i.d(photocopy)
-proof of enrollment
-leave of absence from my school
-dentist certificate coz i got monthly appointment for my braces
-my boyfriend scanned passport
-boyfriend invitation letter stating support
-boyfriend scanned bankstatement 6 months
-boyfriend scanned 2 years tax return
-flight reservation (roundtrip) with itinerary
-travel insurance
-travel itinerary plans
and guess what. when i got the message that my passport can be picked up.. i rushed to vfs and yeah i got my VISA STAMPED for 6 months multiple entry. answered prayer talaga. isa pa yang weapon! faith in GOD. effective!
imagine wala akong funds pero i showed everything i can my intentions, and that i will comeback sa ph. just prove to them that and you will definitely get yours too… Goodluck guys.
Hi Justine! What does a dentist certificate look like? Hand written? Printed? Thanks!!
its just a normal certificate or letter from my dentist. printed letter :) with dentist clinic letter head

Does it mean I can collect my passport na?
Thank you in adavance as reply :)
I’m not sure. Please give them a call.
No, that means they have received your docs and it’s bound to be reviewed by an officer anytime soon. Please bear in mind, visa would results would take 12-15 working days.
Hello kitty kit*
I applied the same date april7 here in cebu, I received a text from Vfs an hour after
“The visa application for GWF*** was forwarded to UKVI on 4/7/2016
And then Friday I received an email from Manila
“A decision has been made on your application and your documents are being returned to the Visa Application Center(VAC). You will be contacted again by the VAC once these documents have been received and they are ready for you to collect”
Usually it will take 10-15working days. At exactly 10days they emailed me. Hoping na this monday mag eemail ulit cla.
Hopefully approve! Hope approve tayong lahat :) Amen!
Amen to that sarah :)

Hello. I would say Its not really necessary because you have sponsor as long as ma prove nya lang na kaya ka nyang e sponsor thr whole trip..dapat may savings cya atay maipakita na huge amount. I applied last year I did submit my passbook which contains 4k only kc hindi na nahuhulogan pero na approved naman. As long as may maipakita kang ties dito. :)
*at may maipakita I mean
hello justine,
just wondered maybe you could give me any advice .
i am planning to apply for a marriage visitor visa and it is most likely as the visitor visa with 6 months validity. My intention is to get married to my british citizen GF and definitely go back to philippines after 6 months. I am a seafarer and i have travelled u.k many times already. I even stayed there for 7 days after when i disemabrked the ship as a transit with a letter from Bristol Boarder Force. In all my travel to the U.K i have complied all the visa rules. And we have a baby too born in the U.K.
My only problem now since i am now here in the Philippines, how can i prove them that i will really go back to philippines ? what evidences and docx do i need ?
Since i am a seafarer i am a contractual worker, my company would only issue me a contract letter if i go back to d ship on their discretion.I dont have properties here in the phil, neither a family ties. my parents are not rich and they only have sari-sari store,. hehe
What i only have is a Bank Savings more than enough to pay for my airfare, prevoius job contracts, and proof of our genuine relationship, mg gf bank statements and etc.
In your own opinion in regards to my situation, do u think i have the chance to be given a Visitor Visa ?
Thank You,
PJ
hello, im not sure about your circumstances, case to case basis kasi ang pag apply. kasi mine is i have my parents as my dependant which is a strong tie already sa ph and school stuffs. then i didnt told that my BF is sponsoring me as it will quite alarm the consulate na baka may tendency na mag overstay ako especially dalaga pa. just complete all the necessary requirements yun lang and do a cover letter (explaining details of why u want to uk, how u met ur gf, how many days ull stay and u wont be overstaying, ur job description etc) hope this helps
Hi, I really need some advice about this. Pareho tayo kaya lang pati ticket sponsored sakin. I’d appreciate kung magreply ka thru my email ravendedios@icloud.com thanks!
Hello this may be too late..but I dont think its a good idea. Tourist visa is only for tourism which means you are not allowed to work nor get married. I would advice you apply for fiance visa.
justine what do you mean by cover letter? and passport with visa stamps? paki sagot nman po ooh.. need lang talaga ng help. thank you
cover letter is a letter addressing to the uk consulate na igrant ang tourist visa mo. and you have to explain your circumstances or anything u want to clarify in ur letter(lalo na if may prob ka sa job mo etc) since walang interview ang pag apply ng visa. and eg. pa na pwede mo iadd sa cover letter.. “why do u want to visit uk, how u met ur sponsor, how many days will u stay, do u have ties in the ph?” (just a brief summary/ clarification of ur circumstances) it doesnt need to be a NOBELA. just summarize it parang it will help the consulate understand ur intention to visit clearly
Hello sis justin paed, pls need to hear ur advice is it fine if all hes documents like invitation letter to financial documents and properties is all scan and sent by email and i will print it all! Pls sana po mapansin nyo ako, thank u in advance, kipsafe and godbless, xxx
They prefer if you’ll submit all the original documents. They will sent it back to you after . Good luck!
hi, yep printed copies are fine and acceptable;)
Hi! I’m really stressing out too dahil dito HAHAHA napaparanoid ako masyado baka mareject ako sa visa, ang kinaibahan lang nating ang sponsor ko si bf. Can I contact you? Para lang manghingi ng advice kung ano dapat kong gawin at I submit. I’d appreciate if u reply asap. :)
My scheduled appointment will be on Wednesday, i think ive got all the docs so i hope maapprove. Fingers crossed. Wish me luck x
Hi Justine, congrats . can I as ask how and where can I avail travel insurance and the travel itinerary plans was printed or hand written?
Hi Justine, do I need a travel insurance when applying visitor’s visa to UK? is it a must? and how can I pay the visa on line if I have no credit card? I have only savings acct. card. And flight reservation, do they allow from the airline company without payment pending on the visa approval? Please I need clarifications on these. Thanks.
Hello Wanderlass, i am planning to apply for a uk short visit visa. i would like to know if there’s a standard Documents Checklist Form to be filled up? where can i get it? or i will do my own checklist?
Is there a List of Documents Submitted format? We are trying to fill up the application online yesterday Jan 24, it was so hard to access. Is it really this hard? Thanks for your help
I didn’t encounter problem with their website during my application last month. Just keep saving every minute when you fill up the online form and review your data before submitting/confirming. But they will give you checklist at VFS. Good luck!
Hi Cherry,
You need to get on to the official website of UK visa. (Can’t remember the website but you should be able to look for it online via Google). Infos are all there and you should be able to see the documents/checklist you need to submit. Checklist are normally given only on the day of your appointment date at the Consulate. They give it to you after signing up at the Reception. Hope that helps. X
This blog was such a great help to me. I am a permanent resident of UK and sponsored my sister and her children to visit me in April. They now received their UK Visa after 4 days having submitted their application. Surprisingly it was very quick! You are a blessing to a lot of Filipinos who are wanting to visit UK or other countries. I have learned a lot from your post. Thank you for sharing your experience with UK visit visa.
Been wondering how much does my bank account need to have in order to be approved of a visa. And how much does my English boyfriend need to have?
Do they need proof of relationship? (Which I guess not coz it’s just a tourist visa)
Hello po. Did you use priority service or standard service ?
Hi ask ko lang need pa ba ng another valid ID or kahit passport nlang??
Hi! Im thinking to invite my mother in law here in u.k and I would like to sponsor her as she doesnt have job.
Please tell me what are the documents that your sister need to submit when she and her children apply for their visa
Thanks
Hi cciophaf (or whoever knows the answers to my questions):
So here is our scenario: My cousin (who btw is a minor) and I (I am 22 by that time; I am the travelling companion of a minor) will be travelling to UK. We will be completely sponsored (from air fares to everything) by my aunt (my cousin’s mom) and his British husband.
1. Do we need to avail travel insurance even if we will be completely sponsored?
2. Do we need proof that we are cousins and we’re related to each other including my aunt (do they need to send a copy of their marriage certificate or both of our sponsors’s birth certificate etc)
3. Do I still need to produce COE and bank statement (I just recently started working and my saving are not yet really big) even if again we are being completely sponsored?
Whoever will be answering my questions, God bless you! Currently processing our requirements already. Please help! I don’t want our application to get rejected.
♥
Answer to your questions:
1 – You don’t need to get a travel Insurance.
2- Yes it would be if you provide both birth certificate, to show that you actually related. And if your Aunt is a British Citizen then provide passport or any document that shows she is British.
3 – Yes produce a COE and bank statements/ certificate – not important to how much money you have, the important would be from your sponsors, They need to provide last 6 months Bank Statements, Payslips, Land/ Property Title – just to show that they can afford to look after you, can accommodate you without claiming benefits from the government.
You need to tell your sponsor to write an Invitation Letter stating that they will pay everything i.e air fare, accommodation or any expenses that will occur, This way you will completely be covered.
Since you are travelling with a minor, somewhere on the Online Application form you need to state there that she/ he travelling there with you.
Hope that’s help. Good luck.
Hi cciophaf! Really appreciated your quick response :) Follow up questions lol (i’ll be screenshot-ing this for my future reference haha,
1. Aunt is not yet a British citizen (but on the process tho). Do I still need to provide like their marriage contract or birth certificate of her or his husband etc just to prove that we are related to her/them?
2. Since both of us will be travelling, do we need to secure two copies of our sponsor’s financial statements, letter of invitation, etc?
Thanks again!
♥
1 – If this is the case provide her husband British Passport plus their Marriage Certificate, no need to provide her husband birth certificate.
2 – If you’re submitting your application on one envelope then 1 copy each supporting document would be fine.
Make it sure when filling in the Online Application; fill in correctly this is important! i.e that you travelling together.
Hi cciphaf! Don’t know why the reply button was not appearing on your last comment but anyway thank you so much.
1. So most probably scanned copy of the marriage contract and my tito (lol) will do right? Should we also include the original ones?
2. Really? Can we apply pero one envelope lang? (well based on your experience when you sponsored a trip is it okay? Like two applications for visa (both my cousin and I’s) plus a single copy of supporting docs from them)
Thanks again!
♥
HI YA, sorry to interrupt, but I’m having a hard time to find a flight deal for my mother which is planning to go for a visit with me here in uk. i know the rule that a tourist visa should have a return flight ticket booked but is it necessary that its the same airlines or i can book her different airline like one way in emirates and return in klm? pls advise! best wishes!many thanks x
Hi, yes it’s fine.
hello po sa inyo. ask ko lang anong visa po kapag 10 days lang mag sstay para mamasyal at bumisita sa U.K? standard visitor visa parin po ba? at ano pong mga requirements ? salamat po sana matulungan nyo po ako.
