UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders
It was a week ago that I revealed my RTW plans and the beginning of my quest for visas.  Every Filipino who have experienced applying visas to Japan, US and Europe (Schengen, UK) can relate to this agony.  I went through both before but it doesn’t get easier. Since I’m going through the whole process again, I thought I’d make an outline to give future Filipino applicants a starting point. Digging through pages and pages of requirements can truly cause nausea, no kidding. So here you go, a blow by blow account on how to apply for UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders.
UK VISA
The United Kingdom (UK) is composed of the following 4 countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.  As a Filipino passport holder, let it be a default to assume we needed visa to travel anywhere outside Southeast Asia. UK is no exception. There are several visa types but I’ll be focusing on Tourist Visa.  UK visa is applied through official partner VFS Global.
My focus will only be the application of UK Visa For Philippine Passport holders applying for TOURIST VISA. If you’re studying, working, marrying, or visiting family, I’m sure there’s a whole other bunch of stuff you need to prepare. I can’t help you with it, sorry.
Restrictions in visiting UK as a tourist:
- Visit to UK cannot be for more than six (6) months;
- Leave the UK at the end of your visit;
- Have enough money to support yourself during your stay in the UK without working or needing help from public funds.
- Will not take paid or unpaid employment.
- Will not marry or register a civil partnership, or give notice of marriage or civil partnership.
- Will not get private medical treatment.
When to Apply for UK Visa?
As with most countries, UK visa can be applied maximum of 3 months before intended entry.
Where to Apply for UK Visa?
There are 2 parts in UK Visa Application: (1) Online Application  (2) Appointment to submit biometric and supporting documents.
You’ll need to have in hand your passport, UK address (hotel booking or friend’s address), email address and begin your  online visa application.  You’ll need to go through the following:
- register for an account
- fill in the application form in English
- pay for the visa fee online (in most cases)
- print out your form
- book and attend an appointment at a visa application centre
You also need to:
- have all the supporting documents you need for your visa
- translate any supporting documents and include them with the originals if they aren’t in English
What to bring to the Appointment?
- A printed and signed copy of your online visa application form
- Your current valid passport  Note: The UK Border Agency will retain your passport until they have reached a decision on your visa application. Bear in mind if you have travel plans before going to UK.
- Previous passports
- Original supporting documents, with photocopies and translations
- Printed copy of the supporting document checklist
- Payment or proof of payment of visa application fee.
- 1 recent photograph (not more than 6 months old) according to below specification.
Photograph Strict Specification
- Taken against a light grey or cream background;
- Clear and of good quality;
- Printed on normal photographic paper;
- 45 mm high x 35 mm wide in size
- Taken with nothing covering the face, without sunglasses or tinted spectacles, or a head covering unless worn for religious or medical reasons. The subject should have their mouth closed (no grinning, frowning or raised eyebrows) and the applicant should be facing forwarding, looking straight ahead.
What are supporting documents?
Simply put, these are documents that show evidence that you have ties in the Philippines and that you are coming back–job, family ties, properties, etc.
Also documents that shows you are capable of supporting yourself while in UK without the need to find employment–Bank statements, certificates, employment payslip, credit cards, etc.
You also need to submit details of accommodation plans and trip itinerary. However, please don’t pay for your accommodation until visa is issued.
All these should be submitted during the appointment. No further documents will be accepted after. Now, while the absence of these documents may result in unsuccessful visa application, submission does not guarantee visa issuance. More info on UK Visa Supporting Document
If you’re not paying for your own way, or have friend(s) in UK who will support you, you should present them with the following documents:
- Valid Citizen/Residence ID or Passport
- Bank Statement
- Address and contact details
- Invitation letter stating their support
How much is UK Visa for Philippine Passport Holders? Where to pay for UK Visa? (Updated 2-Sept-2014)
Tourist Visa {short term up to 6 months} costs £83 to apply.
Since December 17, 2012, visa fee can only be made online. It will form as part of the online application process. When all items are filled up, you will be directed to the website of WorldPay where you have the choice to pay with Visa or Mastercard. Â They no longer accept payment in person like I did before.
Waiting for Result
If there are no further delays (lacking or unverifiable document), you should have result in approximately 4-5 working days. Track your application through the free Application Status Tool.  You can collect documents personally or have the option to have it delivered to your home by paying Php 450. You also get an SMS saying it’s on its way.
Update: So lesson learned, if you are planning to visit in summer, you have to apply earlier. March and April is really hectic. I received mine in 15 days. This is also because of the Royal Wedding coming up on April 29, 2011.

UK Visa for Filipino Passport Holders kicks off the Visa for Pinoy Series I’m starting in this blog. Here’s hoping it will be a good starting point in your application. I had to go through labyrinth of information to get here.  I don’t have my visa yet but I’ll update often!  Now, moving on to a totally unrelated topic, this is my 100th post! :)
NOTES & UPDATE: I just came back from a very easy application submission. My schedule was for 9:40am and I was there 9:30am as the website suggested.  You have to reschedule if you’re more than 20 minutes late. Total wait time is about 2 hours but once my number is called, it took less than 5 minutes for them to check my documents and then another 5 minutes for them to take my biometric data.
Like I said I was there for 2 hours with about 80 people ahead of me. I saw a lot of people being sent back and forth to rearrange their document, or having to fill up more forms, or worse, being asked to come back. Here are few notes to guarantee you out in a jiffy!
- No need to submit photocopy your application form and passports. They’ll ask you to take it out. Save trees too!
- Paste the photo on to the application form. Not stapled, not taped, but pasted.
- Print copy of the supporting document checklist and check (tick) those supporting document that you’re submitting.  Some people didn’t, so they have to fill this up when there.
- Arrange document in the order presented on the checklist.
- Bring original supporting documents and have a photocopy of them.  I don’t know how many people had to go out and have their document photocopied. Note that you will leave with them ALL your original document (land title, lease document, business registration, bank statements, financial statement, etc.) to be returned with your visa.
- You can only go in with your documents placed in an envelope. Bags and phones will have to be left at their package counter (at the guard). Â So much more consideration than the US Embassy.

If u’ve UK residency, then u r eligible to work in Scotland.
what if i just to have a vacation like canada
Hi Edith …
You said you are married to someone British. I just have a few questions:
1) Where were you married?
2) Where exactly are you now?
3) Where is your husband’s regular “country of residence”?
It is very important that I know which situation you are “in” at the moment for me to be able to give you some straight answers!
Hello! I want to go to UK as as Visitor, I will sponsor my visit by myself but I don’t have bank account, etc. Can my parents the one will provide it? What are the requirements if my parents will be paying my visit? Will I need to present their my parents bank account?
yes
It has become more difficult to obtain visas to come to the UK since 2011 mainly because it has become a very sensitive political matter and because of the numbers of people overstaying. What you need to do is to produce documentary evidence of everything that will make it essential for you to return home to : Property, family, job etc. You will also need to provide documentary evidence of how you will pay for your travel both ways and supporting yourself (including accomodation and food) while you are in the UK. If you don’t provide enough evidence, your application WILL fail. By documentary evidence, I don’t mean letters from friends or family although a letter from the person you are visiting is useful and essential if they are going to be supporting you and they will also need to provide documentary evidence of their bank accounts and where you will stay. Hope this helps
Hi Steve I have all the documents and money for a 2 week holiday in the UK. Also im planning to meet a friend do I still need to have his invitation letter or not? He will not shoulder my expenses but I will be staying with him. Please advise thanks
Thanks for your blog, it’s so helpful..
I would like to apply for a tourist visa soon but i think one of the requirements is the itinerary and where you will stay.
do you have any idea about this? i have my sister in UK but i don’t want to bother her…also, I sponsored her for her student visa in UK, will this affect my application, in case?
Thanks..looking forward for your advice..
The importance of where you will stay is only if you have limited funds. Immigration wants to see that you have enough money for the travel and a proper place to stay and everything else you will need without having to work or steal etc.
hi there,
I’m bit confused what to bring about supporting documents, I’m single and don’t even have job yet for now
also no properties,
so what are more possible documents they going to accept?
thanks…
your page really big help for those who are planning to visit UK…
God bless
Hi there,
Im so thankful to read all of this as my guidance since my bf in UK want me to go to hem for tourist visit, one thing i want to look forward about the supporting docs. its all about the strong ties back home since i dont own any properties, i dont have job recently before im ofw,i dont have any business own,is it honor to be strong ties about just family that i need to go back home cause my father is already in bed and really needs my care and thats makes my job to my father back, its my responsibily to give all the care im the younger my mom was gone died 7years ago,can this will be be honor if only this i show as my ties back home..please i need advice
I am honestly not so sure it will be in your favour, declaring that your father is already bedridden, and that his being bedridden is a guarantee that you are coming back to the Philippines? Because if he is that sick, “Can you really afford to be away for a maximum of 6 months/”, will be your “interviewer’s” next question.
Don’t you have any plans of getting married with your BF? Because if you do, you are, MAYBE, better off applying for a “Fiancee Visa”?
Hi Anabelle. I am a Filipina from Cebu, planning to get married by March 2013 to my British boyfriend.
a. I would just like to inquire about the procedures and information the application for spouse visa.
b. Is it easier to get a fiancee visa, hence my boyfriend was asked to compile some documents to submit to the British Consulate before marriage?
Thank you and hope to hear from you. God bless.
hi! good day! i just want to ask if you know agency that can help and guide me how to apply UK tourist visa. I applied before unfortunately i refuse so i need to get an agency for me to help what i need to do and i saw one near at ecoplaza in makati and i get they service and i pay 60thou pesos but sad to say denied again because of they negligence coz the letter of invitation that send of my sponsor thru e-mail the date that state in the invitation was erase and change into another date and the agency use a liquid eraser that make me refused so now im looking for an agency that could help me thanks and God bless!!!
Also, I completely agree with how they give the information on the website to actively confuse you. Only after digging around did we find that we needed photocopies of all the documents and if you look at the supporting documents pdf file it says that if you have a sponsor then they need to provide all the same info as you would if funding your own trip. However if you look at the sponsor section of the website only it says you just need to provide letter of invitation and bank statements OR passbook. NOT the same.
So I agree with a lot of you that is made over-complicated. However to the girl that says that 21 days is given free for those going to Phili, I would like to add that the renewals over a 6 month period add up to a lot more than 5500peso for UK tourist visa. Also my friend renewed his at 2 months for an extra week and had to spend 7000 peso (in Tacloban), I extended for another month over my 2 months and only paid 4500 (in Puerto Galera). This amounts to corruption in my eyes as the guy I dealt with allowed me not to have an ID card, even though both of us showed when our flights would be. Think the bloke took pity on me and I told him I was interviewed with that bakla from Showtime and we joked about it, heheh. I just wish there was one rule for all. AND, annoyingly in Phili, if, as a foreigner, you pay enough you can get lifetime residence no questions asked. It’s all about money at the end of the day, I’m sure UK visa people fail some applications because they want the fee all over again. In england they do the same with one’s driving test. No matter where you go, it’s all about money.
interesting blog and comments. As a British citizen, I am sponsoring my girlfriend for a general tourist visa. She has been asked to pick up her passport and documents tomorrow so I guess we will find out then whether it was given or rejected. bit nervous as the hassle and time of doing it again is just not something i wish to contemplate right now.
My biggest worry is that because I am unemployed (having recently returned from backpacking Philippines) that I had to use my mother as an additional sponsor, hoping they accept that. bombarded them with bank statements and certificates, invitation letters, copies of passports and my own visas to phili and pics of us together. wish I had printed out some of our facebook conversations as well now.
Also, you say it has to be original documents (+photocopies) , well how was I supposed to send the original copies of bank statements and property ownership from the UK. I would never send that stuff in the post. So I just did colour scans and then got her to photocopy them as well to make them look more authentic. hmmm….
oh and it took 10 working days, longer than I had anticipated!
Oh thanks for this as I will start applying for the UK visa. I am just waiting for my court clearance as the Supreme Court is my employer. This is really a big help.
Hi,where will i pay the visa? and how to pay?
